It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.
1. You act as if you’re my best friend
Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.
Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.
The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…
Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

2. You don’t get paid enough
And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.
What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?
3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?
And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.
Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.
4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra
Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.
5. Money doesn’t grow on trees
I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!
By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.
So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.
Update: Here’s a rebuttal of the many silly justifications for tipping that people have given in the comments section.
Let me guess, Bowman… You’re Indian right? I don’t know why you people seem to think you are superior. Clearly you are physically inferior (ugly)! I’m sure Cameron Diaz would say the same!
In reply to Jess
I see: accuse someone of thinking that they are “superior” — straw man–and then knock it down by making a racist statement yourself.
Clearly, you must be a waiter/waitress.
I’d love to see you try to pay your way through college by being a waiter. I don’t care if you were a shop floor manager, you were never a waiter so you absolutely cannot make a comparison. I’m not saying being a shop floor manager is easy, but I’ve never been one so I’m not going to be a jackass and say “This job is so much harder, blah blah blah.” Try to cater to the demands of 15 tables at one time. Take all of their food and drink orders, bring everything out in a timely fashion, check up on all of them to see if there is anything else that they need (and if there is you better take care of it quickly), sit new people down as they come in, and when a table leaves you better make sure it’s cleared and wiped down within five minutes. Waiting tables is much more than just taking food orders and bringing them out.
We do all of this for $2.13 per hour. We have to report to our bosses how much we made in tips, so the IRS does know about them and we do get taxed on them. The fact that you think that we’re hiding it from the IRS is laughable, and really it’s just an excuse for you to be stingy.
These restaurants cannot afford to pay every staff member minimum wage, especially when it’s not a chain restaurant owned by a huge corporation. The money they are able to save by paying us less keeps the restaurant going.
Shooting someone’s kid and spitting in someone’s food are two totally different things. It may be a health violation to spit in someone’s food, but it’s not illegal. And how can we spit in your food if you don’t leave a good tip? Tips are left when the meal is paid for. You know, AFTER you’re done eating. The food was already brought out. How can we spit in it if you’re digesting it? But if you’re going to be a jackass and say from the beginning “I’m not going to tip you,” you are absolutely asking for it. I wouldn’t do it, but you can bet your ass that there is a waiter/waitress out there who absolutely will.
A 10% tip is not a favor. It’s the equivalent of you spitting in my face.
But honestly, the one thing in this article that really shows just how much of a shitty person you are is this quote:
“The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…”
Not only does that mean you won’t tip, it also means that you won’t donate to charities or do anything that would benefit some sort of cause. You’re clearly not poor. What you are is a greedy, pathetic little man. Everyone works hard for their money (except for those who were born rich). You’re not special for it, you’re just like everyone else. Money may not grow on trees, but I can 100% guarantee you that you can leave a 15% tip on a bill and it won’t set you back financially at all. If you have enough money to eat at a restaurant as opposed to making the food yourself, you have enough money to leave a tip. You just choose not to because you’re consumed by greed.
Have a nice day. I would say that I hope I never see you in my restaurant, but I’d slap automatic gratuity on you the moment you sit down. I have tuition, rent, taxes, car insurance, and other bills to pay. Oh, and I need to feed myself. That’s kind of important too.
In reply to A decent human
You’re NOT a “decent human being.”
You’re a self-righteous asshole.
In reply to suki
And the author of this article is? Oh please. He acts like he’s the only one who works hard for his money, he accuses us of not paying our taxes and messing with his food before we even know he won’t tip, and he’s greedy to the point that he just doesn’t give a shit about anyone else. He would never donate to a charity, or buy a friend a gift, or help a friend in need out because he’s just that greedy. What a wonderful man.
And if I’m not a decent human being, neither are you. You feel obligated to tell me I’m a shitty person when you know NOTHING about me other than the fact that I find this man (and other people like him) to be self-centered and greedy.
If anyone is the asshole here, it’s you and the author of this article.
In reply to A decent human
just because he is an asshole, does that mean he is completely forbidden from eating at a restaraunt? the world is full of assholes, that is something called life. and if that asshole does not tip you, that is how the ball rolls. there are children dying of hunger and our service boys are getting PTSD from protecting us, yet we complain about assholes and tips.
Besides, why do you have to play your emotions into tipping? restaraunts are a BUSINESS and in business, you leave your emotions at the door. Its not that he does not give a shit about anyone, the author acknowledges that he, as a consumer, has fulfilled his obligatory part in the contract between the business and the consumer by paying what the business (in this case the restaraunt) is asking for. if the restaraunt REQUIRES a 15% tip, then he must also pay that as well, as that is also another means of the contract between customer and business. if he CHOOSES to tip 15%, than that is his personal business and none other. if he DOES NOT chose to tip 15%, the same applies.
In reply to Common Sense
He’s not forbidden, but he shouldn’t go if that’s going to be his attitude. And if he’s going to go to that restaurant regularly and the staff start to recognize him, he should not expect good service. They don’t want to waste their time on someone like that. I know that assholes are a part of life. I deal with them every day. But if that asshole doesn’t tip me, that’s not just “how that ball rolls”. That’s less money I have to put towards bills. That’s one less half-decent meal that I can afford. I’m sorry about the soldiers and I’m sorry about the children, but I need tips to live off of. These tips are practically all the money I have to my name. I have every right to complain if someone stiffs me.
Stop bringing up the emotions part. It’s not that. It’s that I need to make a living.
And yes it is that he doesn’t give a shit about anyone. He knows that servers make $2.13/hour and he knows that they need tips in order to support themselves, but he stiffs them anyway. Why? Because he simply doesn’t care about anyone. Even if you don’t know someone, you should at least care enough about their basic human needs.
He can choose to not tip 15%, but that’s a greedy choice. Greediness is a terrible quality to have.
In reply to Common Sense
>>the world is full of assholes…
And you are one of them.
I ABSOLUTELY AGREE,
Why the eff should they be tipped just for doing their damned job?
Yet they have some attitude that you OWE them a tip—and a big one at that.
In America, where every idiot is praised, these particular idiots not only want tips, but they EXPECT them and take for granted that they’ll get them.
Come the fuck on!
And if you think that’s bad, then get a load of this:
THE NEWEST THING(AND THIS REALLY KILLS ME) IS THAT NOW YOU’RE EXPECTED TO TIP THE CASHIER AT THE REGISTER FOR YOUR TO-GO ORDER.
WOW.
WOW.
WOW.
Are these mother******* serious?
And talk about fake and phony servers:
How about the ones who NEVER leave u alone the whole time you’re trying to eat? They constantly patronize u while you’re trying to swallow your food, all in the name of getting an even bigger tip. Are they stupid enough to think I don’t know what they’re doing?
They either are totally rude and standoffish or they hound u till the end of your meal—either way, they expect that huge pay-off.
In reply to suki
We don’t expect a big tip. 15% is standard, and if you think that’s a big tip then you are really stingy.
You called all of us idiots. All of us resent that.
We take tips for granted? No. I’m very grateful for the tips I get. I don’t make much, but I am thankful that I have a roof over my head, food to eat, a car to drive, and that I can get an education.
Since when is the newest thing tipping the cashier when you get a to-go order? I don’t know who told you that, but it’s not true. None of us expect tips from that. We’re not giving them our service, so we don’t expect tips. Simple as that.
If a server tries to get a bigger tip by constantly checking up on you to the point where it’s annoying, then that is a shitty server.
Checking up on a table about 10 minutes after they get their food and then occasionally checking up on them afterwards is NOT “hounding you until the end of your meal”. If I see that someone’s glass is empty, I’ll ask if they need a refill. If I see that someone has pushed their plate to the side and has stopped eating it, I’ll ask if they want me to clear it or if they want a take-out box. If everyone has totally stopped eating, I’ll ask if they want anything else or if I should bring the check.
Would you rather me not ask you how the food is? I ask that because if you don’t like it, I can bring you something else free of charge. But I guess you’d rather eat something you don’t like and be miserable than letting me fix the problem.
Do you not want me to ask you if you want a refill? Fine, be thirsty. That’s not my problem if you don’t want me to take care of it. And if you don’t want a refill, I’m not going to ask you about it again.
You don’t want me to bring you a take-out box even if you want to take your food home? I guess you can just take the food home in your pockets.
You don’t want me to take your cleared plates? You must love having those in your way. And I guess you like making my job more difficult too. Taking away your cleared plates while you’re still at the table is called pre-bussing. It makes bussing the table once you leave take a lot less time. The longer it takes me to bus the table, the longer it takes me to take care of other customers. But since you insist, I guess the other customers aren’t important.
You don’t want me to bring you the check? You’ve got two options. One, you get up and try to find me to get it and then get all pissy because I wasn’t there to take care of it. Two, dine and ditch. But be careful there. There are these lovely things called cameras. We will catch you and have you arrested as soon as you walk out that door.
And there you go again, making generalizations. You place servers into two categories and refuse to acknowledge that there are plenty of us who aren’t like that. In fact, most aren’t, so I really have no idea where you’re getting your information from. Sounds like you have shitty luck when it comes to going out to eat. I rarely encounter servers like the ones you describe. But if you insist that all of us are horrible, then don’t go out to eat. No one told you that you have to.
It’s funny how you called me an asshole and said I wasn’t a decent human being while you spew out lies and make incredibly rude generalizations. If anyone is self-righteous, it’s you. You seem to think you’re so wonderful, but then you make comments like this. Do you not see how all of the stuff you said is incredibly rude for no good reason? You’re talking about people that you don’t even know exist. At least when I was criticizing the author of this article, I had his writing as a basis to do so. I also have your comments to form an opinion about you. You have the right to judge me too based on my comments. However, it’s pretty obvious that nothing I said makes me a horrible person, and you know it.
In reply to suki
Go back to your own fucking country, gook.
W O W This is one HOT topic.
(Unlike my food from a server)
In reply to Zapious
It’s funny how you blame the server for that. Even if the food isn’t brought out right away, it’s supposed to be kept under heat lamps. It’s the kitchen’s fault if your food is cold, not the server’s. Ever hear the saying “Don’t shoot the messenger”? And if your food has been cold every time you’ve gone out to eat, you’ve been going to some shitty restaurants. That has never happened to me (except at a buffet).
In reply to Really?
Hey dumbfuck, read the reply I wrote, addressed to you.
This is to:
Really?
Hey Really?
Get a fucking life, u fucking loser.
OOOOOH, “That’s never happened to me.”
U protesteth too much, asshole.
I bet it HAS HAPPENED to u, but u just don’r realize it—-with a cum-bucket like u, they’ve spit in your food, but you’re too busy avoiding reality(“Really?”), to have noticed.
Shitty restaurants?
How would u know?
Do u know who I am, where I come from, my life,my circumstances?
No.
Thus, u sound like the stupid piece of shit that u really are.
Get a clue, loser, and THEN throw stones.
In reply to suki
I’m just cracking up at how you say I’m an asshole. You just attacked someone who hasn’t said ANYTHING rude. What is your problem?
In reply to suki
1) I have a life. I work full time, volunteer on my days off, and go out in the evenings. I spend my downtime on the computer. You’re the one who doesn’t have a life. You attack random people on the internet. Don’t you have something better to do?
2) All I said is that I’ve never been served cold food. I think I would know if my food was cold. I did not say anything about never having a horrible server.
3) Cum-bucket? Are you implying I’m a slut? That makes no sense. You know nothing about me other than the fact that I’ve never been served cold food at a restaurant.
4) I was in the restaurant business for years. I’ve never seen a server spit in someone’s food for no reason. I’ve only ever been polite to servers. They have no reason to spit in my food. You just seem to think that they’re all sadistic.
6) You’re the only one here avoiding reality. You’re so full of hatred that you project it onto innocent people that you know nothing about. I’d like to see you work in the service industry for a while, then come back and say how horrible everyone is.
5) How do I know that the restaurants are shitty? Because the food came out cold when it should have been kept under a heat lamp. Every other restaurant does that. Only a shitty one wouldn’t.
6) No, I don’t know any of that, but this has nothing to do with you. That information is completely irrelevant.
7) I’m a stupid piece of shit? I did not say anything stupid or rude.
8) You need to get a clue because you have no idea what you’re talking about. Please go to a psychiatrist or something. All of that anger and hatred you have towards someone you don’t even know is really unhealthy.
9) “Hey dumbfuck, read the reply I wrote, addressed to you.” Why did you need to write that? You could have just written this and replied to my comment with it.
Keep getting angry. Keep writing stuff that doesn’t make sense. Keep picking fights with people who bring up valid arguments. You’re only making yourself look stupid.
Anyone who thinks it is unecessary to tip can go eat a dick…you expect someone to wait on you hand and foot to make sure everything is perfect for you yet you won’t leave any appreciation. Waiters and waitresses make about $2.13/hr and pullin 50 or 60 hours a week only gives you a $3 check after taxes. Tips are relied on so when you skip out ona tip it makes you look ignorant and cheap. If you don’t want to interact with anyone then takeyour stupid ass to a fast food restaurant. Remember, when you walk into my restaurant, you’re practically in my fucking house so respect my services.Oh, and by the way, it’s got nothing to do with keeping your legs closed or being uneducated you dumb fuck it’s all about money. Just don’t walk into a restaurant where you know you’re supposed to tip, not leave one, then get pissy when you get frowned upon and bitched the fuck out.
In reply to Sophia
Sophia,
We are not expected to tip in the UK but I always do. If I was not expected to tip in the US I still would. I just dont agree with that customers should have to pay for the shortcomings of employers.
Most of my meal bills the last time I was in the states were $50-60. My tips for these meals were between $10-20. I would still tip this amount if it wasn’t expected.
In an ideal world staff would get a decent hourly wage, and tips would be a nice bonus.
I usually always pay for my meals on card, but always tip in cash, so I know it is going directly to the server.
Not to be mean, but I would like ask people who complain about not receiving tips and address certain copmlaints:
1. “Waiters and waitresses make about 2.13/hr and pull 50 to 60 hours per week…” well first things first were you FORCED to work at whatever establishment? if not, why not quit and work elsewhere (retail, unskilled mechanical, medical)?
2. “slaves to the people we wait on” well if you think waiting on people is difficult, i’m pretty sure our boys over seas are probably putting in a bit more work. They put their lives at risk for us and they receive some benefits, but do we, as Americans, tip them? no. do they even ask to be tipped? never. they chose to defend this country for pennies and they NEVER complain.
3. “i’ll spit in your food” you want to spit in my food? go ahead. it comes to show me that american service is equivalent to criminal behavior. that, my friends, is something called blackmail. have you ever heard of hostage kidnapping? well that behavior is similar to “tip me or i’ll spit in your food”
4. “here in america, you’re supposed to tip 15%”…unless there is a specific requirement stated on the menu or in the restaraunt establishment requiring a 15% tip, there is no need for anyone to be required to tip 15%. they should tip what they want and thats it. there are waiters around the world that do not receive any tip. are you as americans some how endowed by the Creator to receive a 15% tip while everyone else does not need to? are these other people somehow inferior to you not needing a 15% tip?
5. “tips are relied on” says who? in this world of entitlement, why are tips “relied” upon? isn’t income reliance based on individual needs? heck a millionaire can argue he relies on at least 500,000 a year.
i do not wish to ridicule anybody, but servers here in the US, please use some common sense. leave your emotions at the door.
In reply to Common Sense
1) In this economy, you take whatever job you can get. Plus, when waiting tables, you’re supposed to make approximately $10-$12/hour when you combine tips and salary, which is more than the $7.25/hour you’d make at any entry-level job.
2) Just because some people have it harder than us doesn’t mean that our job isn’t hard. Plus, soldiers make enough money to live off of without having to make tips. They may not be able to live the fancy life, but they can afford a place to live and food. Without tips, we could not.
3) I won’t spit in your food, but if you flat out tell a server that you will not tip them, don’t expect them to be too happy. It may not be right, but you’d be bringing it on yourself.
4) The waiters that don’t receive tips live in other countries where servers are paid at least minimum wage. They’re not inferior to us by any means, but they do not need tips in order to take care of themselves. We do.
5) This is the dumbest argument I’ve ever seen. We may all have individual needs, but there are some basic needs that everyone has. You can’t deny that a person needs food and shelter. Well, how can anyone afford that if they’re only making $2.13/hour and they aren’t getting tips? They absolutely are relied upon and it’s ridiculous that you would say otherwise. And did you really compare us saying we rely on tips to a millionaire? Millionaires, like many other people, can live off of what they make and do not need anything else.
You’re the one who needs to use common sense. This has nothing to do with my emotions, it has to do with whether or not I get to pay my bills. I live cheaply, but I still need money to get by.
In reply to Pamela
Hello Pamela
Those are very valid points, but why do we need big brother government to regulate EVERYTHING we do?
1–you’re right, in this economy we should take whatever job is available–if you’re a teenager, why not get paid whatever the you and employer wants even if its $2/hr? some employers simply can’t afford being regulated by big government which leads the consumer to pay more. Some small businesses can barely stay afloat with these regulations leading them to hang it up. If big government weren’t so involved in our lives, regulating the heck out of things, maybe the consumer would be given a break and we’d get the savings pass along. Whole markets would open up–cheaper food, shelter, entertainment, etc.
2–i understand the job is hard, but again its work its not supposed to be fun and games. if one cannot afford food, what about family? friends? in other countries, the kids are able to get the proper education/training they need while with their folks. Again, if we don’t have government regulating the heck out of us, we’d be able to live a bit more freely and huge amounts of options would open for us in terms of living situations and food. why do americans feel the need not to live with 5-6-7 members of a family that are not necessarily your spouse or children?
3–spitting–i don’t expect a waiter to be happy, but again, you’ve confirmed my argument that waiters do in fact lack character. Back to the soldiers argument, those guys are being shot at in battle, yet when they capture a pow, they treat them with respect. its an extreme argument, but can’t waiters leave their emotiosn at the door even when not tipped? its business. don’t expect to be pampered.
4–countries such as germany, austria, iceland, brunei, norway, and singapore, etc. do not have minimum wages, yet they are some of the fastest growing markets in the world. the nations with minimum wages and other forms of regulation have had their markets stall . These nations have little to no government regulation, yet look how well they’re doing. Greece for example has HUGE regulations, yet Germany, who lets people do what they want, is pretty much bailing them out.
5–again, basic needs vary among people. Again, if we remove all of these regulations from the table, we would see whole markets opening to people who do not necessarily make 100,000 dollars a year in the housing, food, and clothing industries. minimum wage is big brothers way of ASSUMING we at least require that much. Some do, some don’t. The wonderful thing about liberty is we can decide FOR OUR SELVES what we need and what we don’t need. Now the entier workforce does not make minimum wage, yet most still complain that they’re wages are NOT enough.
Tips should be treated as a bonus you receive at work. Most would be more than happy to receive a 5% tip, so why can’t wait staff be satisfied with what they need? and again, no one is forcing you to take this job. There are other companies that are on huge hiring splurges currently even in this economy.
If wait staff don’t like the current situation–boycott, stop waitign on tables, unionize, etc. make the employer suffer for their actions, than perhaps you would see change in the business. if every waiter stop waiting tables the employer would be hurt, forcing them to give in to the demands of the watier without the government butting in.
btw due to wait staff extreme tip requirements, declining service and declining food quality, i’ve actually found fast food to be tastier and, yes, healthier, than the chain sit downs. and they actually provide BETTER customer service (most of those workers are not white, make little and are happy just to be on the job).
Thank you! Finally, someone with a brain. Seriously people, I don’t understand this custom, it’s ridiculous!
This post really shows ignorance.
If the employer pays the waitress/waiter more, guess what will happened to your bill? It will cost MORE.
There are a few restaurants in the US that doesn’t require tips but all of these restaurants that I have been to has a higher pricing than the ones that accept tips. Just quit being an asshole and maybe live in someone else’s shoes for a day. Many waiters are college students or college graduates waiting for a career in their field but has to feed themselves in the meantime. I know some highly skilled people that has a decent jobs but works as a waitress on the side to help feed their families/extended families. I really hope that the original poster lose their job and has to get waiter job to see how it feels.
Anyone that thinks it isn’t necessary to tip their servers is ignorant. Sure, if you receive extremely bad service, don’t tip. I’m 19 years old, I pay for a lot of my own stuff including college expenses, don’t smoke, and I don’t have any kids. I make $2.13 an hour in Virginia, which is the minimum wage for servers. The minimum wage for most other jobs is $7.25. It is custom to tip your server, so that the $2.13 an hour becomes at least $7.25 overall. Sure, it would be nice if the minimum wage for servers was higher, but it’s NOT because most people in America tip. My manager is not going to raise my wage when he knows I can get atleast minimum wage from tips. I have to declare my tips at the end of each shift, which I get taxed on. They are a part of my income. I also have to tip out the bussers, hosts, and bartenders (which also make $2.13/$3.13 an hour). A percentage of my sales goes to them, which comes out of my tips. So when you tip, your money is not only going to the server. There is a LOT that goes on that you don’t see when you’re a customer in a restaurant, especially if you’ve never been worked in one before. When you sit down at that table, you are agreeing to be served. Whether served means just deliver the food or actually interact with you, you are receiving a service from someone that makes $2.13 an hour and it is the right thing to do to tip them. If you don’t want to tip or “can’t afford” to tip, don’t go eat out. Also, leaving a tip less than 10% is an insult. Saying I can “keep the change” and it’s 36 cents is a huge slap in the face.
In reply to Chris
Well, at 19 I guess it’s time to grow up! “I pay for A LOT (not all) of my own stuff”. Who the hell else is suppose to pay for it? What do think the rest of us do? Life is hard. Don’t like your $2.00 /hr job get a different one. Dog walker or baby sitter pays more and you don’t have to beg for tips
P.S. Sounds to me like your saying if people would just stop tipping, your employer would pay you more. I agree with that!!
In reply to Zapious
I’m a lot more grown up than most kids my age. Yes, I don’t pay for EVERYTHING. There are kids my age that have never had a job, don’t pay for a thing, and are spoiled out the ass, but that’s besides the point. Yes, life is hard. I never said that I don’t like my job, I was saying that people should tip. Dog walking and baby sitting don’t pay more either, I’ve done both. Also, I don’t “beg” for tips, I earn them. If I didn’t receive any tips, my employer would technically have to make up the difference. BUT what you don’t realize, is NO restaurant manager is going to go through each one of his employees and check that they’re making minimum wage when it is pretty much guaranteed due to tips. Yes, making sure that I’m making minimum wage is not the customer’s problem, but that doesn’t negate the fact that they are receiving a service from me and it is proper to tip.

Chris,
Would you agree that the shortcomings of this system lies in fact with the employees taking liberties and paying staff like you poor wages? I pity people working hard for poor wages (Done it myself, when I was younger).
For me it would be ideal if you got the $7.25 minimum wage, and a nice $5-10 tip on each service would be ideal.
