5 reasons why I won’t tip you if you’re a waiter

It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.

1. You act as if you’re my best friend

Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.

Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.

The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…

Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

Did you earn this tip?

2. You don’t get paid enough

And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.

What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?

3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?

And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.

Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.

4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra

Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.

5. Money doesn’t grow on trees

I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!

By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.

So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.

Update: Here’s a rebuttal of the many silly justifications for tipping that people have given in the comments section.

  1. I am a food server and there are certain races of people that I will give 100%. b/c i know what they are going to leave me at the end. Fucking indians are the worst. They are fucking demanding, they eat slow and never get ice in the water. They think that leaving two dollars is a good tip. Know this never fuck with the person that serves your food

Just an FYI, I am Indian but I tip 20 to 30 % so please don’t generalize! Thanks. (30% good service, 20% ok service, 15% or less bad service) That’s my way of tipping.

  2. Those of you who are against tipping your servers have no idea what servers go through at work. We work for $2 an hour (more or less, depending on state laws) so that you can enjoy a steak for $10. If our employers paid us more, we would have no incentive to provide good service and the restaurant would lose business because of the raised menu prices driving customers away.

Working in a restaurant during a dinner rush (especially on holidays or weekend nights) is easily one of the most stressful jobs around. The picture you paint in your head of the life of a server sounds rather pleasant compared to what actually goes on. I wish it was as easy as getting a food order, putting it in a computer, and then bringing it out to you. Does the term ‘sidework’ mean anything to you? What do you think your server is doing while you are sitting at your table masticating? We are constantly on our feet running food, keeping up with ice, cleaning up spills and broken plates that could result in a lawsuit, answering your every need, no matter how ridiculous. Something always needs to be done, and usually no one has time to do anything because of how busy we are. Whether it’s running out of clean glasses and having to run to the back to get more (if there are any ready), in turn slowing down your drink-to-table time, or attempting to make 10 glasses of sweet tea for that large party you just got sat with only to realize that there is only enough tea for 4 glasses, there’s always something. Being a server means thinking on your feet and being able to multitask and handle a high-volume atmosphere without caving under pressure. What about when you’re taking the order of your ever-so-complicated 8-top in which each person has a very specific, long order and then you notice the hostesses have no choice but to double seat you because the restaurant is at full capacity and on a 90-minute wait? Now your greet time (which is usually supposed to be around 30 seconds after a table is seated) to that new table will have risen, and your timer for the 8-top will have a few extra (vital) minutes added to it because you will be forced to postpone the putting in of their order. What’s that? Now to add to that small incident, one of your other tables realizes that their burger has onions on it, and they don’t like onions (even though you remember repeating their order back to them and asking if lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle were all okay). Now you have to find a manager (equivalent to finding water in the dessert) so that their meal can be discounted and their burger can be remade. You deliver drinks to your double-seated table, and oh no! They decide they actually want that margarita on the rocks, not frozen. You go back to the POS station, enter the new drink into the computer, enter your large party’s order and pray that it comes out quickly enough for them not to be pissed off, then find your manager again to have him comp the unwanted margarita from the check. Meanwhile, you see that your large party has sucked down their teas. You go to make more, dodging servers with full trays of food on your way into the kitchen and hearing the various forms of communication happening between the cooks and the managers, expo workers, servers, and takeout workers (AKA a bunch of yelling and confusion which somehow always works out one way or another). Then you realize the ice bin is empty. While your manager is calling for help running food you run to the ice maker to refill the ice bin and pray that one of your coworkers can/will run the food so that you don’t get chewed out for trying to make sure your table had fresh drinks.

I could go on, and it gets way more complicated than that at least a few times a night. But I can honestly say that I love my job at this point in my life. Why did I choose to work for $2 an hour? Because I was raised in America where servers are tipped and we drive on the left side. Because I am paying my way through college so that I won’t have to be a food server forever. Because I like seeing people who are satisfied with their meal and who are enjoying themselves. I don’t interact with my tables for the sole purpose of a decent tip. I love engaging in conversation with new people and making sure that they have a fulfilling and happy experience with me as their server. Thankfully, most people are a pleasure to serve. Most people are also good tippers. Would I work as hard as I do were it not for the tips? Absolutely not. Do I perform my job well just to receive a tip? Absolutely not. I work hard and do my best for each of my customers, whether they tip me or not. The ones who don’t tip are made up for by the good people who do tip. I enjoy making people happy, and I believe that I deserve your 20% tip. But if you don’t tip me, I won’t spit in your food or act unprofessionally towards you. I’ll think poorly of you and question your morals and simply hope to never see you in my section again.

If you think your server is an unskilled high school drop out, you’re incorrect. Your server can handle more tasks at once than you can and balance a 30 pound tray with a smile on her face. And if you think that servers make too much money with tips, consider the time after closing when you and all of the other customers are gone, but we are not. We are cleaning, prepping, depositing, doing sidework, etc. for hours after the restaurant closes. The tips we received throughout the night make up for the times that we are performing labor for under minimum wage, and that’s the only reason it’s legal to make us stay and clean. No restaurant is going to sacrifice labor costs (the highest costs faced by a restaurant) to eliminate the tradition of tipping (as well as eliminate most of the customers who would be repulsed by the price of food to cover the heightened labor costs).

Oh, and a side note: it would be a greater liability and cost to a full-functioning restaurant to allow guests to pick up their own food and make their own drinks. What, are you going to tell me the guests should go directly up the the cooks’ window and tell them their food was not cooked correctly? Well I sure hope all our guests come prepared in their non-slip shoes and have their serve safety qualification cards handy!

I hope nothing but the best for you non-tipping people who cheat the system and enjoy cheaper food without paying a tip to your server (even though your meal plus a 20% tip would still come out cheaper than it would if the restaurant paid your server minimum wage).

We have a word for people like you.

That is really all you need to see and I don’t need to read the whole paragraph of job duties. I could write multiple paragraphs about job duties at any position and act like it warrants a tip, but they are what they are; JOB DUTIES that YOU signed up for.

If you cant understand that link, then I don’t think you are an informed employee in the least bit. If you still complain about making “less than minimum wage” after absorbing the information in that link, it’s nobody elses fault but your own.

And stop with the whole food prices would double from raising wages to minimum wage. Lets say the server works a 4 hour shift at $7.50 an hour; 30 bucks. at $2 an hour; 8 bucks. So you have to make up 22 dollars difference over the period of a 4 hour shift. at 2 dollars an hour steaks are 10 bucks, and at minimum wage most say “doubled”, so 20. Based off of that logic it would take 2-3 customers to make up the difference in your wage (for the whole shift), when you’re serving well over that amount (within an hour usually). If you’re getting 20% tips (and not even all the time) and making more than minimum wage, why would there need to be a 100% increase in prices to make up for that 20% thats now gone? … now math has not always been my strong suit, but those numbers dont make sense to me. (Math was never really my strongest subject, so if theres an explanation let know)

If you think being paid minimum wage, and the possibility of GRATUITIES on top of it, would cause employees to work less effectively you are way beyond wrong. Why would people bust their hump for 2.13 plus tips, but decide to be a shitty server when they make minimum with the OPTION of tipping still available? It’s not like you making minimum wage outlaws tipping altogether, but it goes back to the way it should be; AN OPTION FOR EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE (not just service in general) Do you realize how bad that makes servers look saying that you wouldn’t work as hard if it was your employer who was ensuring you made a living off your job instead of the consumer? That just shows how bad your work ethic more than anything. You wont work hard because you’re being paid properly with the possibility of making EVEN MORE than you do now. Simple solution to that though if it is the case; Fire them and replace them with someone willing to work, someone without a sense of entitlement for no reason what so ever.

Clearly servers don’t take into account the financial state of the customer coming in because of their sense of entitlement (like TGI fridays is some sort of 5* restaurant that if I cant afford to tip at I should eat the slop at McDonalds) And most want to keep it this way so they can continue to complain about the wrong people, while making well over minimum wage and putting unnecessary pressure on the customer whos just there to eat.

I have one question for you; How much do you believe a server should make annually? What other profession would you put them on par with for financial compensation?

  4. Thank God non-tippers were few and far between and most people tipped enough for me to pay my way through school, even though they had to cover the non-tips of the ranting, anti-tipping crowd while they did it. At least most people understand that the return from paying many current and former servers benefits society far more than you tightwad, internet-warriors who have declared a war on servers will ever, EVER know. In your argument to point blame at the system, you punish many single parents and/or college students. If you feel that strongly about it, start petitioning the restaurants and politicians, and quit taking it out on the people who are just trying to pay the bills. I made about $12-$20 hour and had no insurance as a server. and the same could be said for many of my coworkers and former classmates that work in other science fields.

Now, I suppose it’s your turn to feel indebted to many ex-servers like me that heed EPA, state and municipal protocols that enable you to stumble to your sink in the middle of the night for a huge glass of drinking water that isn’t lethal. In fact, your sinks, washing machine, shower, lawn, toilets and even the local car wash also receive the same high-quality water. We also ensure that your backyards and lakes aren’t polluted with the industrial discharge and waste of every other house, farm and business around you. And it’s not just my field either. I have one friend that performs analyses that ensure that the soap your nurse is washing her hands with does it’s job, and another that is involved with the document control of FDA medical trials. We all served and/or bartended. And a zillion others do a zillion other jobs that contribute to society, or are in some way involved people who do (like kids), and it’s almost guaranteed you take most of them for granted. So on behalf of all the servers there were, are or ever will be, we humbly thank you for paying us outright to bring you your 6th cup of coffee an hour after your meal ended. Conversely, on behalf of past, current and future servers, you’re welcome.

  6. You know why you should tip? Because it is customary. Willfully ignoring the customs of a country while you are there is RUDE. Therefore not tipping in the United States is RUDE. It is gauche, culturally unacceptable behavior, and if you wonder why you so often find yourself asked to justify it, it is because you are a rude, inconsiderate, entitled boor who has no business travelling the world until he can learn to respect others’ cultures. It is not your place to lecture us on how you think our cultural practices are stupid. I’m sure if a travelling American did the same to you, you’d be up in arms. At the end of the day, this isn’t about the money…it’s about you being the kind of jerk who likes to assert to people in powerless positions that he thinks his culture is inherently superior to theirs. Proud of yourself?

  8. It’s your choice to tip or not but we remember and you might not want to come back to the same place twice. There is some leeway in service that tipped employees can give and if you treat us well we will go out of our way to try to make sure you have a good experience, but if we remember you as a stiff you will get the shittiest service we can get away with giving you and if there is a way we can screw you and not get in trouble, you are screwed.

Tipping is your choice, we have a choice in how we treat you. Choose wisely.

  9. I deliver pizza for a living. I’m also a goddam genius. Just really poor and unlucky. I deliver pizza in Viera FL. Look it up. It’s quite rich……(ignore the median income, it’s largely republican tax dodgers) and it has a large Indian community. (all gated) A few (very few) Indians tip me about a dollar or two, but most completely stiff me. I know boo hoo right? This topic incenses many people, and it’s easy to spot who is generous (trustworthy humble, and generally with a higher level of adversity in life) and who is purely motivated for self gain at all times (dishonest, manipulative, unable to see beyond that locked door in their minds and quite often having never actually worked a day in their lives…handed everything etc.) I really fucking hate to be honest here, but Indians (in this particular city) in actuality are very ungrateful. It is simply a fact. They cannot stand other cultures, they seemingly act superior all the time and they are quite spoiled. Ha! They are truly becoming Americans. But seriously people, these people practice infanticide. They kill their baby daughters and continue to do so until they have a more profitable son…..OF COURSE THEY DON’T FUCKING TIP! THEY ARE BABY MURDERERS! Hahaha. All true bitches go ahead. defend that one swami.

to the one calling indians baby murderers… pot, meet kettle. Pro “choice” liberals are pro baby murder, a few minutes of age doesnt change a damned thing. And since quite a few of the people here commenting pro tipping, are also, quite obviously liberals (it shows in the threats of spitting in peoples food, lazyness, and general bad attitude.. and i am FOR tipping people… imagine how you look to those who think you are soaking people to start with!! disgraceful) i just find it ironic. Now as to those who appreciate a good tip but are willing and able to give good service regardless, nothing but love. I dont go out if i cant afford a decent tip, period, because that is the way the system is set up and unless and until it is changed, it is NOT fair to short the service people simply because you dont like the way the system works.

Not poking at you, but what do you mean by “soaking”. Yes I am proturbed. I randomly googled “why don’t Indians tip?” and this page caused me to freak the fuck out. Let’s not make this a political debate. You win…hands down every time. All religion is reality teflon and filthy hard working “liberals” like myself cannot possibly triumph in the face of power. In person, I am the most charming SOB you have ever met. Not handsome, but highly intelligent and polite. Not fake either. I come from a hell most other Americans can’t imagine. A lot of sexual abuse on one side, and complete abandonment from the other. I know boo hoo again. It is from this intense and unforgettable pain of childhood that I can truly and honestly be genuinely nice to people. And I RUN to the door. RUN. There are very few people whom I have ever met in my 38 years (might be lying about my age to protect my job…who knows) who could out perform me. It’s not exactly an astute observation you know….Indians generally don’t tip. I don’t give a shit if servers everywhere else in the world make a living wage. This is the USA… home of greed and outright lies….you know, the system. If Bhagwad doesn’t want to tip, I get it. Maybe he has been unfortunate enough to always have had a terrible server, but is that really likely? Also nice lady, poor Americans needing an abortion might not be able to afford that baby. Adoption….don’t make me laugh. This is quite different from culturally rejecting infant females for monetary gain. One comes from a place of need, the other from a place of archaic tradition (Due to terrible living conditions I know, no need to address that argument) Yes the infanticidal thing goes way way way too far. But I’m fucking angry. A generalization for a generalization. I have always out performed others around me in school and on the job. I have less than anyone I know and I’ve never been hooked on anything stronger than pot….and It’s been years since I bought a bag. This guys assertions sicken me as they are of a mindset that is based on Romney-esque (dammit there I go again) philosophy. Everyone is just a fucking parasite to the rich. When in actuality….blue collar schmoes like myself give this guy a place to eat, live, pretend to work, (perhaps thats unfair) and bitch about the circumstances of his being unhappy with being waited on hand and foot. Yes I am trying to improve my lot in life,…I am in school for nursing…have an AA (worthless) and an AS Chem Tech (chemistry my passion but degree worthless in my area). Stop being so ungrateful Indians. It is unbecoming. I won’t spit in your food. But some of you might actually need my help one day. This is a society. We are individuals but we are most definitely not separate. Help one another, and not just your fucking family and birds of the same feather. BTW, on a funny note, switched from Brighthouse to Earthlink internet a few years ago…(they are actually the same thing) Earthlink offered me a cheaper price. They outright lied about the deal and actually added 5 bucks to what I was paying previously. I kept their emails and ads, and sent an email of my own to the FCC. I literally wrote that the Indians at earthlink were “infanticidal cocksuckers” who were stealing from me, and that “now that theft is completely legal, I’m going to be rich very soon.” The FCC promptly informed me that earthlink would be correcting the situation. Which they did. I assume that many Indians here in the USA are here because the deplorable conditions in their country necessitate barbaric traditions for survival, and they simply want a better life. Fair enough. So do I. Tip me.

      • In reply to me (not an infanticidal cocksucker)

Well, im not an indian (except where that means native american, ive got a bit of that in me) and as i said in the comment, i am for tipping. Im a former waitress myself (shows how long ago it was, by the terminology) so i know its not a cake walk job, and i know that how much you actually make varies greatly by where you work, and pizza places are some of the worst tipping places, delivery is worse yet. People dont figure you need much of a tip to bring a pizza out to them when you arent running around refilling glasses etc.. but they dont realize that you generally use your own vehicle, putting wear and tear on it, and sometimes have to buy your own gas as well, from your tips.. part of the problem there is that so many companies are now putting “delivery charges” on the bill… so it causes people to pause, and think… is that the tip? or am i supposed to give even more on top of the extra delivery charge? Me i figure the delivery charge either goes towards gas or right to the company, so i always tip, and if the weather is bad and the pizza is hot, i tip better, at my house you are usually gonna end up with 10 bucks in your pocket for 20 bucks worth of pizzas. I brought up abortion only because you brought up infanticide, and to me, they are one and the same thing, either way a baby ends up dead, and in india they used ultrasound for many years to find out the sex of their babies and then used abortion to kill them before they were born, was this somehow less horrific than killing them after they were born? I cant see how. A baby of the age it takes to know the sex is also old enough to feel every bit of the pain of having its limbs ripped off, its skin dissolved in salt water, or its skull pierced with scissors and its brains sucked out to collapse the skull… frankly were i an infant i would rather be left in the snow. Adoption, you laugh.. why do you laugh at the idea that a child will have a chance to live a full life in the home of people who want to give it that life? someone who wants an abortion would surely give up the child as soon as it was born, so it would be quickly adopted, unlike people who have babies to keep their man, or because they think they are cute, or whatever who end up abusing and neglecting, yet still hanging on to the child for years.. those poor children are much harder to find homes for, mainly because the selfish parents refuse to relinquish custody and love to yank the kid back into the horrible situation over and over again… (bitter foster parent, can you tell?? Luckily my daughter (i dont care about the legalities, shes my kid, im the one who is there for her when she needs some one, im the one who held her hand when she gave birth to my grandbaby and im the one who helped her learn to nurse and will be there again when my next grandbaby is born, her “biological” mother be damned.)) Granted, there is always a chance that an adopted or fostered child will end up in a crappy situation and be abused, but guess what, most of them live through it.. i did, and i was with my bio mother and step father.. .like you i was abused, sexually by my step father and physically by both, though my mother only beat the crap out of me a couple times, the rest was benign neglect and leaving me to the mercies of my step father… but here comes the point… IM ALIVE… and once i turned 18 i was able to get out of that situation and make my life what *I* wanted it to be.. yes i still carry the scars, but i found a wonderful man, got married, weve been together for 21 years and i have 4 beautiful children who would not exist if not for me, and one beautiful and grateful foster daughter who might not have made it out of her situation alive if it werent for me, and whos beautiful children might not exist.. so yes.. being born, even in a bad situation, trumps being killed before birth any time. Also let me address another fallacy in your “abortion is different from infanticide” argument… poor mothers… a good percentage of abortions are NOT to “poor mothers” who cannot afford a baby, but to married, middle aged women who simply do not want another child, either right now, or ever. Or do not want one until their career is settled, or any number of other spurious and selfish reasons. Again, adoption, or, heres a thought, stop being so damned selfish and appreciate your child… do you know how many women have MULTIPLE abortions and then when their career is finally where they want it, or they have the big house in the suburbs or whatever other spurious reason they “put off” having children (by killing the oldest) realize that they are now in their mid thirties or above, have scarring from their abortions, their bodies are polluted with chemicals from years of birth control pills (yes, despite what “now” tells you, contraceptive use (and failure) goes hand in hand with abortion, and the rise in the rate of use for each mirrors the other, unlike the hogwash they spout like “free contraceptives and sex ed will reduce or end the need for abortion…” hogwash. it only continues to cheapen the value and perception of human life to the point that a woman can casually say “im not ready to be a mother yet” (clue, too late, when you are pregnant, you are already a mother… abortion just makes you the mother of a dead baby that YOU ordered the hit on) and hire someone to murder her child. The fact that many thousands more babies are killed by abortion than by infanticide, even in countries like india, should tell you that “out of sight, out of mind” is a powerful thing… you dont see the baby before you have an abortion.. so its easier to kill.

You probably didnt bother to read this, and it doesnt matter, im done with this conversation, i spent years arguing with people over this and all i got was a nervous tic whenever the subject comes up.. im just going to leave you with one little statistic… 56,000,000… that is 56 MILLION abortions, JUST in the US, JUST since roe v wade.. and that is reported abortions. Think about that for a little while. Ok one more.. 3,500.. that is how many we (the US) are averaging in a single DAY. More americans than died in the twin towers on 9-11, every, single, day.

People whom feel superior (myself included) generally don’t outright insinuate it. It comes through in actions and behaviors….my using a slightly more expansive vocabulary for instance is a perfect example, although you would never spot me from my clothing. I am a pauper. To be honest, I barely skimmed your reasons. Very ignorant on my part. The fury went straight into words. I work for a die hard Christian Republican (Obama is a nigger, and all of his/her (still paranoid enough to try and retain a greater deal of anonymity) employees are parasites etc.) whom is at the very core, the problem. Not once in many years (8) has this employer showed any interest in elevating any hard worker above a lazy one. The hard workers are few and far between. This employer would never consider increasing pay for top performers, nor would they fire the lazies to find better employees as a means to alleviate the unbalanced work load suffered by said top performers. I am not entitled to any kind of assistance whatsoever. I am quite literally stuck here…basically as a slave. You are the rock, and my employer is the hard place. You insinuate that I have some control over a judgmental, unintelligent right wing christian idiot whose father just happened to give him/her a lot of money. Between you Bhagwad, and my employer, you are far more intelligent. So why not see things how they are. Be a softer rock…is all I will suggest. Sorry for calling your race “infanticidal”. It was completely unfair and came from a place of great anger. Shukria. I obviously don’t know how to spell thank you in Hindi. (again I’m making assumptions. So do you.)
