5 reasons why I won’t tip you if you’re a waiter

It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.

1. You act as if you’re my best friend

Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.

Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.

The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…

Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

Did you earn this tip?

2. You don’t get paid enough

And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.

What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?

3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?

And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.

Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.

4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra

Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.

5. Money doesn’t grow on trees

I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!

By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.

So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.

Update: Here’s a rebuttal of the many silly justifications for tipping that people have given in the comments section.

    i mean, seriously? ahahah….
    ok let’s be serious…
first off, no one force you to leave any tip. i am a waitress and I totally understand if some guests don’t feel to leave extra money, simply because it’s my job. I am a professional worker in an environment where tips are like a tradition and I like that, obviously, but I don’t pretend it or change my attitude or my service depending on it. I see ridiculous your post and your needing of stating it. take it easy man, we waiters are not so desperate to run after your pennies…
now, taking it personally and from a human being position, I don’t want tips from you. I don’t want costumers like you in my business, unless the pay is worth. and you don’t really look a vvvvip costumer. if you know what i mean. you rather look like a cheap pain in the ass costumer, not clearly balanced, who need to state his reason to not tip a waiter. are you ok?
i can tell you after 12 years now in this job that you really don’t get any point of what it is all about. when i work, tips are always welcome because i know how hard is to be a waiter. you have no idea. i work in UK and disagree with service charge, because the companies should pay more money for their employees, recognising their skills and valuable apport to the business. i make money for them, and they should pay me, not my costumers on top of their bills, cutting my chances of getting a proper tip, sometimes.
    anyway it’s not fair.
tips are different, tips are for the interaction you can get with the costumer, how memorable you can make a night out for someone.
you unfortunately can’t get that feeling but you would be surprised to see of how many people are ready to pay extra money happily when they notice the extra mile you are doing just to make them happy, relaxed, spoiled. giving them an experience everytime they come to my bar restaurant.
i would recommend you to use justeat and have your food at home so that you won’t be annoyed by human beings, and humanity with waiters in particular have not to face your arrogant and miserable attitude, lacking the experience of a night out, which is made out of food, wines, cocktails, efficiency of service, decor, smart people, good vibes. usually for all that, high bills…
you definitely would break all of it so please stay out.
You probably go to cheap restaurants that, with all respect, can serve good food but lack the experience at all above levels.
go to a michelin star restaurant and get your damned perfect food (i am sure you can get some good offers on booktable or some other cheap options around. some offers are really good so go for it, you tap water costumer) and see if the waiters there are “the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order”. Then, also teach to an establishment like that how to hire his employees.

You have no fuckin’ idea of what you are talking about. Honestly you are ignorant and unrespectful, most of everything, stupid. Please come to my restaurant for a trial shift and i make your fuckin’ass, you idiot.
anyway, as “read your costumer” is the first rule of this underestimated job, i would treat you as a “challenging costumer” – as we politely call assholes like you, anticipating your complainings, facing you with a smile instead of a punch. i don’t expect nothing from people like you, imagine any extra money…
I would tip you to choose another restaurants and keep your change and horrible vibes far away from me.
Your tip would be your face when you have nothing to complain about because everything is perfect. if you are smart enough you could even say a sincere thank you and recognise the abilities you need in some situations in hospitality.
so bon appétit, don’t forget justeat…that’s the experience you’re looking for, and maybe the only one you can afford!
ps. be careful, deliverymen expect tips too… it’s a taugh life…

Just curious, who are you trying to convince with all your bragging about how much money you make? It really seems that you are trying convince yourself. Since you are clearly an idiot, let me give you a tip: the more you have to brag about your money, the more insecure you are and less likely that it is true. We get it that you are a little dick asshole but do you really want to add being a pathetic liar on top of that?

I will be going to even more expensive restaurants now. without tipping. Now that I am in upper management. I receive a private office with a bathroom and shower. My own personal secretary, and with bonuses should be seeing a little over 200,000 in my first year. Good luck with your pathetic waitressing job.

  3. How about next time as soon as you sit down you tell your waiter, “I’m not going to tip you, because you don’t deserve it, get mad at your employer.” You will see the drastic change in service you get. Your food may be cold by the time it gets to you, I bet your drink won’t get refilled.I bet then you’ll complain to the manager, the server has probably already told the manager what a jerk you are, and guess what, that server isn’t going to get fired for giving just you, the person who doesn’t want to tip them, slow service. Maybe the manager will give you a meal for free, but that’s probably exactly what a cheap sake like you wants. In other words, the manager won’t care about a jerk like you, we will just want you out of the restaurant as soon as possible, and hopefully you won’t come back! If you don’t want to tip, tell your waiter first. Then you’ll understand the purpose of tipping. We are giving you a service! Order your food to-go if you don’t want to tip. Most people still tip on to-go orders even just a dollar or few but waiters don’t get upset about not getting tipped on to-go orders, because we really just had to enter an order and bag it up.

I go to nice restaurants that have corporate offices. After I get done sending them a not so nice email you won’t have a job any longer. You are nothing special. Just an unskilled waitress. So shut up and get me another beer.

  4. I have a response for each of your “reasons.”

    1. If you don’t want your waiter to be friendly toward you, then why are you eating out? I can understand if someone is being overbearing, but part of what you pay for is the experience. If you don’t want to have the experience associated with a human being (yes, human being) serving your food, then don’t go out to eat.

    2. One reason why servers get paid so little is because when restaurants determine wages they take into account the tips that will be made. It’s not really that different from someone who works on commission. Many companies pay lower wages because they expect their employees to earn their pay based on performance. If your server does his/her job, then the TIP is their PAY. So, if you don’t leave a tip, then you are not paying the whole bill. If you can’t afford the tip, then you can’t afford to eat out, so stay home. If you disagree with the system, then, again, don’t go out to eat. It’s not for you.

    3. Yes, it is wrong to spit in someone’s food if they don’t tip you. But if we’re being completely honest, you probably deserve it. If the waiter did his/her job, then that person DID earn your tip (see #2).

    4. Again, the tip is not “extra.” It is that person’s PAY. You are paying for their services with your tip, not paying them “extra.”

    5. Money doesn’t grow on trees? You think someone should be “grateful” to you for giving them a shitty tip, thus underpaying them? Would you be okay with not being paid for doing your job? You are not doing anyone a favor by underpaying him/her.

I have never worked in the restaurant industry and even I am able to acknowledge these basic facts.

If you treat a person in a service position as though he or she is beneath you, you are a bad person. That is a fact.

You are a stupid delusional waitress. A tip is extra. Not pay for your worthless so-called services that I don’t want or need. I just need you, to bring my food to me and refill my drinks. How do I say it nicely, that is your unskilled monkey job. You are nothing but a totally unskilled person that waits on people for a living. No self-respecting adult with half a brain would have to do this for a living. Just goes to show you that waitresses are lazy
      flunkies of society.

Sara, I’m sorry but you are a dumb bitch!!! First off you contradict yourself (no surprise) by saying that your not going to pay money for things that you believe you don’t need, but in the very next line you say that you NEED them to bring you your food! Are you really that stupid??? I also have a fact for you! People that talk this way are the lowest of low. You are not worth the dirt on the bottom of my shoe! You couldn’t do a servers job or wouldn’t even be hired for such a position because you have no idea what it takes to do that job, not to mention dealing with people like yourself! You are a sorry excuse for a human being and I truly feel sorry for you, your life must really suck!

The only reason she needs the waiter to get the food and refills is because we are not allowed to get it ourselves. So the restaurant tries to guilt trip us into tipping the worthless waitress. There is no reason to tip her for doing her job. I do look down upon her because she truly is a failure of society to have to do this for a living. What about her bills and all her illegitimate children who has a father of unknown origin? I don’t give a shit not my problem. Get a real job.

  5. I doubt anything that I am going to say is going to sway your stance, since you are so passionately opposed to tipping. But then why do you continue to frequent bars, restaurants, cafes… all to stiff your poor waiter or waitress? It’s not like you don’t know the custom whether or not you agree with it. There is an ignorance in your attitude and actions from perhaps never having worked as a server, bartender or other food service employee but it comes off as entitled. I understand that you feel as though anyone can go get any other job making minimum wage, but for those who are single mothers, college students, or those between jobs- it’s an excellent way to make a living and be able to have the flexibility to improve one’s education or have the time to raise a family.

I worked as a bartender for 6 years sacrificing my nights and weekends (along with my early 20’s), coupled with working a full time admin position as I put myself through college. The money that you leave your server not only pay’s their bills but it is a sign of appreciation for the work that they do. You’re argument is that we “act like your friend when we’re not” (or something to that effect), would you prefer a server or bartender that scowls? These people are doing a job and trying to stay positive for their customers, their colleagues and for themselves. It is not easy work especially considering that a lot of people have a lack of empathy and understanding due to ignorance, entitlement or a mix of both.

It’s really unfortunate that you seem to can’t seem to see beyond your narrow minded perspective, and you are right that a server’s pay is not your problem. But I truly hope that you or someone that you care about never have to experience what it’s like to work in food service. I personally found it to be such a rewarding and humbling job along with being so fun, but I suppose that would really depend of the way that you choose to look at it.

Minimum wage? Try again. Most states allow employers to pay servers $2-3 dollars an hour. By all means don’t tip, but don’t be surprised if no one wants to serve you. You don’t think that’s fair? Then go eat at a place where you can serve yourself and leave some open seats for the not so cheap customers.

“Most states allow employers to pay servers $2-3 dollars”. How is this the customers problem?. The price on the menu should include the cost of the food, effort to cook it, the infrastructure, ambiance ……. This includes the effort to cart it from the kitchen to the table.
A skilled factory worker makes 10-15 dollars per hour after investing in technical training.
No one should make more for pouring drinks and carting food.

It’s a great way for a loser of society to make a living. The waitress does not need any skills, training, education,or responsibility. She makes minimum-wage. It is unnecessary to tip her for doing her job. Tipping should be abolished and waitresses should make subminimum wage because that is what they are truly worth. At minimum wage they are overpaid. The only thing dumber than one waitress is 2.

Tip the acronym. This had to be made up by a retarded waiter or waitress. Case in point:

The house was (insured) for $1 million.
The blanket will (ensure) that you will be warm.
TIP is wrong! To insure promptness. Should be (TEP) To ensure promptness.
This is why waitresses will always be poor, they are stupid. Tipping started as a way for the upper-class to show the lower-class they are shit. Also to show the upper-class is better then the servants that serve them. Hence modern-day waitresses. No (tep) for you dummy.

You are nothing but a high school dropout that waitresses. You do $40 million a year in your dreams sleeping on a cheap futon. You’re jealous and spiteful of the rich successful people you serve that can afford expensive meals. You’re right I don’t give a flying fuck about the waitress. She gets paid minimum-wage to carry food from the kitchen to the tables. Tipping is not required or necessary since she is already overpaid. There is no reason to have empathy for a loser of society. I am rich and successful because I studied hard and have a graduate degree. The waitress is a financial loser because she didn’t even graduate high school. I don’t care if her mother was an alcoholic drug dealer not my problem. Rich people having empathy for poor people is funny.

Tipping you is ridiculous since nothing you do is even worth minimum wage. I would tell you to get a real job, but since we all know you have no skills or ability to do so that will never happen. You will just be a stupid waiter that complains about not getting tipped for the rest of your life.

I’m really jealous you make a lot more money than me. You should give me some of that money because I’m poor and have two kids with two different fathers and I’m not even sure who’s is who’s. I have no skills and there’s nothing else I’m qualified to do. So Tip me because I gave you 15 seconds of my time. Your plates were so heavy for my lazy butt to carry. 7. Through my college years, I worked as both a server and a bartender. Those jobs afforded me the time and money to study for classes that I was paying for out of my own pocket, as well as leave me with appropriate time of day required to study and attend class. Most of my earnings were tips, and for those of you who clearly don’t understand the reason for tipping, it’s because these people provide a service, and services can vary in degree, therefore your payment should also vary (but it should never amount to less than 10%…. Let alone nothing at all). But what I learned mostly during my stint in the service industry was mainly a lot about ignorance and human relations. And because of these jobs that I worked, which I would not trade that experience for anything, I realized there are a lot of awful people walking around in our society.

After I received my undergraduate, I went to law school and graduated in the top 10% of my class. I also worked in the service industry during these years, and I never would’ve finished if it weren’t for my tips. I began my career as an attorney when I turned 25, and I left the firm that I started at when I turned 27. I didn’t leave because I wanted to pursue another position in law, or join a new firm. I left because I realized that while practicing criminal defense law, I found myself defending the very same dipshits I came across working in the service industry, you know the type; they’re usually headstrong, they never tipped when they dined out, they are usually ignorant, republican, deadbeats (whether in terms of parenting or as a member of society), and they often times seemed like they felt as though they were above the system, or that social normalities didn’t apply to them.

I just always thought it was an interesting dynamic between someone’s basic beliefs or understandings and the larger issues in their lives (people that usually required defense could also be categorized as non-tippers). So what I’m trying to say, is that those of you who are un-empathetic towards your server, and you refuse to leave a tip, you are also the type that is more likely to murder your wife because she didn’t cook the quiche properly. Quiche is a bad example let me rephrase; “because she didn’t order your meal properly at the drive-thru.” Those who don’t tip purely because they have a false vendetta against tipping, are also the type of people who can never be persuaded to think logically from an alternative perspective. These people will always and forever be prisoner to their own skewed vision of the world, they are more likely to believe in religion and conspiracies (which is a weird combo, but you have to be a proactive thinker to realize that… And non tippers just aren’t proactive). The real point I am trying to make, is that people like this, non-tippers if you will, will always go against the acceptable norm until the acceptable norm benefits them directly, that is to say until THEY need to live off tips, or until THEY need criminal defense because they sold crack to a twelve year old. And the only reason why anyone ever NEEDS to make a change is because they are reactive, and not proactive, which only further proves my previous point. Quit acting foolish people. And for those trolls that will say or think that I left my career in law because I couldn’t “cut it” or whatever you may end up thinking, just know that I just turned 29, and built my own media company from the ground up, employ over 100 people, and currently do over $40 mil in annual revenue. The best part tho, is that I no longer have to associate with the ‘non-tippers’ demographic. Drive safe people.

The only way you make 40 million is when you get drunk and collapse on your Cheap futon. You are just really jealous of all the rich people that can afford expensive meals and you have to clean up after them.

Why would you want me to serve for a day? So I can see what a lazy dumb job you have? I went to college so I would not have to do such degrading work. No I won’t give the waitress a dollar she is not worth that much money. $2.13 / a hour is too much money as it is. Should be reduced to a dollar an hour.

No, I want to see you work at least 8 hours straight, dealing with assholes customers, like yourself, Catering to their every little need, and you’re probably that table who asks for something new every fucking time we come by, just tell us what all you want at once, makes it a lot easier for both the customer and server. But don’t you fucking dare say we don’t bust our asses off, we usually work 8-9 hour shifts, and that’s constant movement, especially when you send us back to the kitchen every five minutes for something new, think about that for a second, that server that you called lazy, is consistently moving for at least 8 hours, and on busy nights, they’re walking roughly 18-20 miles during their shifts, and thats mostly because of assholes like yourself who make us take multiple trips because you didn’t tell us what you wanted at one time. So please tell me again how we’re lazy? When I’m walking 20 miles in 1 shift for an ignorant ass, and get no sign of appreciation, it’s extremely rude and I only put up with this job because I don’t have parents to pay for everything, so I have to pay my rent, my tuition, and let’s not forget food, and I’m barely 21, and I already pay for everything I own, expect I got a little help from financial aid because I was in foster care. Oh and I’ve got a big surprise for you, I didn’t drop out of high school! I actually went on to college, just so I can get a job where I will never have to wait on another ignorant asshole, like yourself.

Oh please, I do not want your sympathy. I’m proving that I am not letting my childhood hold me back. If I was in fact a loser, I would have dropped out and blamed everyone else for the things I’ve gone through. But instead, I am paying my own way through college, and yes, by serving, to get a bachelor’s in Finance. And one day, you’re going to come strolling into my office begging for help because you’re ready to retire, but your dumb ass didn’t save enough money, and now you have to work an additional ten-twenty years just to cover basic living expenses, and I’m going to laugh in your face and advise you to get a serving job to help make ends meet. But then you’ll release that in fact, it does require a degree of skill and no place will hire you because you have terrible people skills.

I have been retired for six years now. I have 1.8 million in savings. I retired with no bills My pension is $160,000 Plus maximum Social Security benefit. Unless I buy another Porsche, I will never even have to dig into my savings. So poo on you. The only decision I need to make is what fancy restaurant I want to eat at without tipping

  8. I assume this author is someone who’s parents paid for their entire schooling, doesn’t have a kid, isn’t a single mom, doesn’t understand a single struggle in life the way real people understand it. Someone who was born with a silver spoon in their ass. Someone who had their entire life planned out before they were even born, a trustfund, family stocks, an estate, everything people who have had to live off of tips and minimum wages never had. There’s an old saying, if you can’t afford to tip, then don’t go out to eat. People like this should learn to cook for themselves and just stay in their own homes, away from the rest of society, the regular people on this planet, people who understand what it’s like to look in your account and see a negative balance with bills still piling in.
