5 reasons why I won’t tip you if you’re a waiter

It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.

1. You act as if you’re my best friend

Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.

Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.

The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…

Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

Did you earn this tip?

2. You don’t get paid enough

And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.

What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?

3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?

And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.

Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.

4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra

Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.

5. Money doesn’t grow on trees

I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!

By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.

So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.

Update: Here’s a rebuttal of the many silly justifications for tipping that people have given in the comments section.

  1. I noticed a lot of servers commenting about the people who don’t tip as feeling entitled. So that made something occur to me: That the servers are so offended with the idea of people not tipping, because they feel like the more wealthy people should HAVE to give them money. Like they’re sacrificing for the customer, so they need to be tipped because that’s the customer’s way of sacrificing for them. You would have to feel pretty entitled to curse someone out or make threats…Or like I’ve seen from a few comments, even follow people around the restaurant all for a $5 tip.

No, I think they feel so strongly about it, because the customer can afford the expensive food, and so the servers like being able to impose on them…Or at least they like that the customers are usually obligated to give them some of their money. Like the customer is forced to share their money with them, since tips are usually an expected thing. But if people refuse, then the server doesn’t have any influence over the ‘rich’ customer. And they must really like having that kind of control I guess.

It sounds really strange, but it just dawned on me. Why else would people be so vicious from a silly article like this? I think they all really like imposing and forcing the wealthy customer to give them their money.

  2. I didn’t have to read your blog to know why you don’t tip servers. You’re a cheap, antisocial dick. Not really all that complicated.

  3. Ok first off, you have NO IDEA how incredibly difficult and frustrating these jobs can be, the ones that rely on tips. We rely on the kindness of strangers. And I don’t pretend to like people, I am not fake in that way, at least not on purpose. Until you have been in someone else’s shoes, no one has any right to say anything about anyone. You obviously have never had a job that relied on tips and the kindness and generosity of strangers.

Stop trying to talk to me and get me a damn refill. I am not your friend I just want to eat and be left alone. I will not tolerate a waitress/slave talking out of turn. If I want to speak to you then I will find you and you should appreciate the honor.

The servant waitress should never speak unless spoken to. I agree, it is an honor for the waitress to serve you with no tip. Serving successful wealthy people is an honor for the servant. It is as close to greatness as the waitress will ever come.

The y don’t tip because they are scumbags plain and simple. This is why every time I get a Dothead in my cab they go the longest route I can possibly find. I don’t play with these people anymore. I don’t expect one thing from them. You get in my car Indian and you’re going the long route. End of conversation. not only do I take the long way, I take them the extra extra long way. fortunately in my job I have the last laugh I know I’m getting stiffed I’m getting my money on my check instead of in my hand no big deal

  6. If you do not want hospitality than do not dine out. Its a servers job to give you the service you wouldn’t be getting at lets say a mcdonalds. I understand serving is a choice and you choose not to tip, but take a step back and look at the luxury you have to go out to eat, get served, not make a meal or clean up after. Without servers there would be only fast food chains.

If there were no waiters and waitresses everybody would be happier because they wouldn’t have to worry about tipping. If there were no tipping sections in restaurants nobody would sit in the tipping section. The waiter is nothing special you’re just a modern-day slave. So instead of not whipping you I just don’t tip you. Get a real job if you want more money.

You must be black. Waiters make 3.50 an hour and run around like craZy so the restaurant can function as a team. Who refills drinks for you obese I mean inconsiderate fatasses. Who cleans the restaurant, stocks , and gives you knowledge over the food and menu. It’s simple, dinning out is a service that is provided. If there weren’t poor cheapasses like YOU, we would ALL be much happier. 5 reasons why you should get off welfare and educate yourself. You’re lucky you’re a coward and there is no name of this article. I don’t want to pay taxes that basically go to you living off food stamps and government housing bc you’re lazy and uneducated. At least servers are paying me their way through college. Keep your opinion to yourself bc you got money, sounds more like… Im a materialistic coward that hides behind my posts. Make it happen I will gladly teach you a lesson your parents never did. Coward

You leave between 35 and 50 percent of your total and MAYBE bitch, you get decent service at best. Don’t pretend like we won’t treat you bad if you fuck around with us. We’re in business because you people are too lazy to cook, or don’t know how to cook. All losers who come into my restaurant have the intelligence of a fly they can’t even pronounce menu items. We all laugh at you.

I would still sit in a tipping section because I am not an asshole. I understand what it is like. I agree that you don’t have to tip, but it is courteous to tip as they make $2.63 an hour or so. If they would fix the system to where servers were making an actual living wage then okay sure tips are not necessary, but as long as they refuse to give them a loving wage and Co tiniest to tax them on their sales whether they get tipped or not they deserve their tips.

Hilarious! Title reads I have $ but you talk like your intitled to everything. My net worth is more than likely 5-6 times more than yours and yet I am very humble. When I go out to eat I expect good service that’s the whole point of the experience. However calling them modern slaves is utterly disgusting. I would love to buy you and show you how a slave is. You are a disgusting human being who thinks because they have money they are “entitled” you are not entitled to anything you are not better than the server who is graciously serving your ignorant a$$ food. You are an utter waste of a human being. As I said I’ve made more money in a year than you will in your life and yet I am still very humble because I am a human I am no better than those who haven’t been lucky enough to have the opportunities that I have. Just sad to see how some successful people think they are above others. You’re not and the way you act you are not happy either. Seek professional help you dearly do require it. I’ll even pay for it I know it would dent your barely existent bank account.
Let me know when you want to enroll in your humanity classes I’ll set it up

I am so far above a waitstaff. I am super wealthy and extremely happy in life. I work hard for my wealth. A waitress has no skill whatsoever. I don’t pay my housekeeper. She gets free room and board. My gardener gets free food in exchange for his work. My chauffeur doesn’t get paid either. He just gets free use of my luxurious fleet of vehicles. I am so awesome that these people respect me for the great individual I am and also know that it is a privilege to be in my company. What’s next, you expect me to tip a hotel maid just because I asked her for more toilet paper? Get real.

I was going to reply to humble, but you did a very respectable rebuttal. Wealthy people such as ourselves are better than everyone else that is a simple fact. That’s why when we fly we have a first-class section that serves champagne and hot towels. You sit next to screaming babies and blue-collar riffraff. If a flight is inconvenient for us, we simply take our own private jet. I too have a housekeeper that I do not pay because I provide a luxury room with gourmet meals. It is so true that they are honored to be graced with our presence. It is an honor for working class people to wait on us with no tip. Humble, I have a room for you if you want to clean my infinity pool.

When you tip, you tip the waiter, not the cook. And it IS possible eat in a good restaurant without the need of a waiter. It’s just that most restaurants impose to be served by a waiter.
Therefor, without waiters there would be still good restaurants and not only fast food. And by that, I mean your point is invalid.

By the way, I don’t want to help an economy based on tips. The best way to stop it is to never tip. There’s nothing horrible in that.

This article is so spot on. I never tip a waitress and am glad I’m not the only one. I am not your employer or friend. I’m just there to eat my expensive dinner and leave. The leave 15-20% is bs. If my bill is $100 and the table next to me ordered a $5 grilled cheese sandwich then why should I have to pay $20 tip and he only has to leave $1 when we have the same amount of dishes to fetch and clear. Screw that, I never leave anything. Waitresses are so greedy and they only report a portion of their income.

  7. Anyone with negative comments (including the guy that started all this) has obviously never had to work as a server or anywhere in the industry for that matter. Yes tipping is optional but if your opting out of tipping go somewhere where it isn’t expected. There are ppl like me that are forced to work these POS jobs because yes it is a POS unaccredited job but someone has to do it. A lot off ppl don’t have an option, i have 2 kids and a husband that works 40+ hrs and full time school on top of that WO a job like this i wouldn’t be able to contribute to my family because most jobs don’t work around real life. My tips go to gas, groceries and bills on a daily basis and yes i hate it because i have to deal with arrogant jerks like some of these ppl responding to a post online that they know nothing about. So maybe before you go spouting that we don’t deserve a tip on top of your overpriced bill that no one ran up but you, and having to put up with you attitude, lude jokes, sexism and racism, maybe you should think about other and then try it for a day and then repost .I believe you’ll be sorely disappointed that it’s not as easy as most ppl think it is.

If your husband had a better job you would not have to be a modern-day servant waitress. When I pay my bill it covers everything that happens in a restaurant Since I am not your employer I will not tip you. If you don’t make minimum wage with tips than your employer has to make up the difference. I also feel that nothing you do is worthy of a tip. The only way you’re going to get extra money from me is if you suck my dick.

It’s not our fault your unable to work a real job. I don’t tip servants just like my great great grandparent didn’t tip their servants. Being a Waitress requires no skill. You should be glad your making $2 an hour and scamming other people to pay your wage. Your pay scale is your boss’ responsibility, not mine. I’m not going to pay for your college education or for a babysitter to watch your unwed kids. If you have no money for college get a loan and pay it back once you have a degree. Waitresses fuck up orders all the time anyway. I’m not paying for your mistakes.

People who try to justify not tipping, that’s fine and dandy. But when you come into a restaurant and pay for your food, you’re not running around getting your own refills, sauces, entrees- nothing. You sit there. And get served. And that is a privilege. However, I think the solution is simple!! Just let me know in advance how you feel about the matter of tipping and I’ll make sure you receive that $0.00 service you wanted!

A few times a week I dine at upscale restaurants. The bill for a family of four usually comes to around $500 including dessert. My favorite part of the evening, are the tears in the servants eyes when they see zero written on the tip line.
Last night as the valet brought my Porsche Cayenne up to the door. A waitress actually had the nerve to ask me what she did wrong not to get a tip. I asked her if she wanted to be terminated from her servant job. She said no sir. I told her that if she ever have the audacity to bother me again, she would be looking for new employment. The tears in her eyes flowed over. How dare she speak to me without permission.

Wow, you must be one important human. See I didn’t have everything I want given to me. So what did I do? I worked my ass off between university classes and paid for it myself. Most of that money came from tips. My point: the people that serve your food are fucking people. Actual humans that have lives and stories, and feelings and you are one sick fuck if making people cry is what brings you joy in life. You think that people who get paid less than you aren’t people? What the fuck, man? Grow some humanity.

By the way, if you want me to speak to you now, it will cost you about 2G an hour. Thanks to all the non-douchebags who sat in my section over the years for helping make my dreams come true.

In my opinion its not about being a bad person, it is a messed up system in which the venue makes more money off of the customers by not paying a reasonable salary. Tipping culture in the US is strange compared to most other countries. Your employer should pay you a steady fair income for you to work, not the customer. This is something that needs to change by everyone not tipping. Even though I see this system as messed, I still cannot bring myself to not tip because i feel like a dick if i don’t.

(so thats a lie) Also, a Porsche Cayenne is one of the most inexpensive automobile you can purchase from them. (not impressed) I mean at least make it a good lie! Say you have a Cayenne Diesel, S, S E-Hybrid, GTS, Turbo or Turbo S.

  9. whether you agree with tipping or not, it’s customary and expected. It’s people with this opinion that probably haven’t ever been waiters or waitresses. I used to be a waitress and was paid $2.50 per hour because of tips. When you don’t tip, your server doesn’t get paid fairly. Don’t tip, don’t dine out. It’s rude. I wouldn’t spit in your food (and seriously, have never heard anyone say they would) but if I saw you in my section again, you wouldn’t get good service at all.

You get minimum-wage whether you make it with tips or not it is the law. So stop the bullshit about $2.50 an hour. If you saw me in your section a second time after not tipping, and you were dumb enough to give me poor service. I would alert the manager, write a letter to the corporate office about your incompetence, and you would be wiping your ass with your unemployment check. I will most likely get a $100 gift certificate to come back again. I know what will happen because this has happened to me before and this was the end result. I am a paying customer, give me a bad time and you won’t have a job anymore.
