5 reasons why I won’t tip you if you’re a waiter

It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.

1. You act as if you’re my best friend

Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.

Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.

The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…

Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

Did you earn this tip?

2. You don’t get paid enough

And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.

What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?

3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?

And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.

Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.

4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra

Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.

5. Money doesn’t grow on trees

I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!

By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.

So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.

Update: Here’s a rebuttal of the many silly justifications for tipping that people have given in the comments section.

  1. I have 5 reasons why I don’t want to smell your body odor because you don’t wear deodorant. It’s your custom to smell like shit, we let you be. It’s OUR custom to tip. See the logic? Probably not because you’re a coward, selfentitled, & very ignorant.

  2. ”Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra” Go get it yourself then. If you think a service is not worth it, then stop using it. Or does serving tens of tables and having them at tip top condition seem so insignificant to you?

  3. Could not agree more. Leave it to the backwards yanks to come up with a system whereby restaurant owners stiff their workers and then expect their customers to make up the short fall…

I doubt you can afford to tip sweetheart. Most people who can afford to tip do it because its the right thing to do.Sure you get your Occasional Scumbag (like yourself) but most people are cool. I’ll tell you something though baby. if you’re a known stiff who frequents a restaurant you are likely getting some extra special sauce on your food. If you’re a known stiff at a restaurant you deserve to have some waiter rub his sweaty ball sack on your silverware which is exactly what they do and I know it for a fact… Eat hearty

Sounds like threats, blackmail, and coercion to demand tips you do not deserve.
As a district attorney, I have prosecuted restaurant workers for tampering with food. This is prosecuted as a felony minimum three years state prison. When you get out of prison you need to defend yourself against a civil lawsuit.
Those range from half a million dollars to over 5 million. Another words you will never own a car, boat, or house for the rest of your life. You are nothing special how dare you tamper with a person’s food!

alright mister big bad DA, which was an easy pun anyways, in order to prosecute a server you would, as you know, need to have evidence. the only evidence i would see as being even potential is a DNA test which we both know is a reach, or a witness either in the form of human or via camera. every restaurant i’ve worked at, servers are like a union within themselves. theyre not going to rat, especially if its over someone who doesnt tip. 2nd, even with cameras, 99 times out of 100 there are plenty of blind spots. the people you claim to have persecuted were hot headed idiots. the 99 other servers who get their revenge on the skimpy assholes get away with it every day and you’ll never know

The Department of Labor classifies service and serving jobs as unskilled labor. It says no training or formal education is required.

Your masters degree must’ve been for something worthless like underwater basket weaving. Because if you got it for something worthwhile you wouldn’t have loans and you wouldn’t be waiting tables.

I live on Long Island, New York – which is one of the most expensive places to live in the United States. I am 24 years old and come from an extremely wealthy family. I do not pay for anything including my cars, car insurance, cell phone, credit cards, private college (50,000/year), etc. Now that we have established that I am better than you, we can move onto my career.
As of right now, going to school full-time and work as a server part-time so you’re right. I can not get a better job. However in a year, I will graduate with my bachelors and start my career path. I also inherited my parents house at the age of 24, so thats another reason why I’m better than you.
Trust me. I wish all I had to do was take your drink order, drop food and bill. However thats not the case. I have to balance numerous tables at a time while listening to your demands. I get 5 dollars an hour and usually work five hours a day. If I worked 4 days that week, that’d equal to $100/week. I am fortunate enough to come from money, but most people do not have what I do. I would love for you to live off $100/week. Instead, I can make up to $500/week thanks to people who tip because they take into consideration everything I have to balance at work.
So you can go choke on your fathers c**k, while he busts a nut in your a**

Now that I have calmed down and read what I wrote. I realize I sound like a stuck up brat, which I am. Even before I was a server, I was raised to always tip 25%. All those things I have in my life and I treat everyone with respect, especially jobs that deal with the public. I ALWAYS tell customer service, servers, cashiers, etc to take their time and that I’m not in a rush. Even though sometimes I am. Most of the time they appreciate it and will reward me with waving a fee or giving me a complement which make my day. A simple “thank-you I really appreciate it” makes me feel great. However us servers do not want to hear that instead of a tip! hahahaha!

There are plenty of other part time jobs out there and alot of even minimum wage jobs are respectable, but being a server is not one of them. A server should be honored to wait on me. You won’t get a tip from me even if i ask for 5 refills. It is such an unskilled job. A waitress should get no more than $2 an hour. The chef does alot more work than you.

You might be the most ignorant person that has commented. Your an important person that makes lots of money. I’m laughing so hard I can hardly type. Jesus what is wrong with you? What did you invent? Create? Give me an example of how your more important? You were born then learned a language that someone else created at schools and insistutions that other people created. You took transportation that someone else invented and sat in buildings other people designed and built. You are a pawn in the game. There are countless numbers of people who can do whatever it is you do. People with your mentality do rise to the top for the most part. It’s simple psychology. The truly gifted people in this world are so smart they always humble themselves with the thought of “there’s no way I should be in charge, there has to be someone smarter or more qualified” and that leaves the door open for people of your mentality to swoop in and take the corner office. The higher up the latter people are, the more ignorant they are. If you don’t want to tip just don’t patronize establishments that tipping is expected. I suppose you don’t make enough to employ a personal chef or enough to have a stay at home wife/husband that could concentrate on preparing and serving meals for her master. Lmao, your a pawn in the game of life.

I think Dan is gay. A server is a lowlife girl’s job. They usually have several kids who never know who their father is and live in a trailer off of food stamps and government assistance. They only work as a waitress part-time and dont claim most of their tips so they can still get government assistance to help pay for their crack babbies. Also most waitresseses are on drugs and choose waitressing because no other job will
hire them if they can’t pass a pee test. Go back to sucking pole Danny boy and make sure you wash your hands before you get my food. I always get a kick out of male servers. They are the lowest life forms around.

Poor babies, tell me something, do you guys even remember how to wipe your own ass, or do you have somebody for that? You’re all as worthless as infants and yet if money didn’t exist tomorrow do you think you would survive a whole day? Could you even feed yourselves if you had to actually cook your own meals? You are worthless, useless and pathetic and deep down you know it, that’s why you treat other people like they are beneath you, because it is literally the only way you can feel good about yourselves.
