It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.
1. You act as if you’re my best friend
Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.
Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.
The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…
Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

2. You don’t get paid enough
And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.
What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?
3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?
And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.
Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.
4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra
Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.
5. Money doesn’t grow on trees
I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!
By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.
So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.

Honestly I don’t know what the fuss is about. Tip in My country is included in the Bill. If you want to leave more tip, sure you can do whatever you want with your money. But Shaming people for not tipping is just stupid. Pay Waiters living wages so that people do not have to Pay the missing part because restaurant owners are Cheap Assholes.
Working menial jobs should not come with the uncertainty of making rent at the end of the month because you had less tables to serve. This is the Real Reason tip is stupid, not because you look like a Douche for not leaving 20%. But because 1. it should be included in the Bill and 2. Service workers should be able to live with their salaries even without Tips. The US has created this Tip culture that has Restaurant owners laughing all the way to the bank, while you bicker over if you should be paying somebody for being a good waiter or not. Newsflash a good waiter retains their job, hopefully with a decent wage, because he has a good boss. A shitty waiter gets fired. People should start campaigning for people to get living wages and stop Bickering over how much of somebodies salary you should be paying out of pocket.

I almost had a brain aneurism reading this. My mother was diagnosed with cancer and my college funds were gone to pay for treatments to keep her alive. By serving in a restaurant I was able to work my way through college and am still working my way through law school. I don’t smoke, or do drugs, or have children. No one knows anyone’s story. I work hard for my money and I am making something of myself. Not everyone is a server as their life long career. In the business if you want to be a manager, who in the end can make great money at the right restaurant, you must start out at the bottom and work your way up. The ignorance of this article and some of these comments are mind blowing to me. That’s all she wrote.

I am not sure how often you can do this. I had a gentleman not tip me and then he came back to eat again and I refused to serve him. So no one served him and he left hungry. I am just conveyor belt, the tip determines how good of a belt I am. Don’t tip but then don’t expect service anytime soon. You can pull this once but if you keep coming back expect something between slow service and no service. I don’t mess around A restaurant probably has an issue if they refuse to serve you but I sure as shit don’t. Get on the joke that is yelp and rage against me or the place I work. I don’t own the restaurant and it doesn’t affect me in the short-term, so I really don’t care. If you don’t tip than you don’t get served. We will pack your food up to go and you can leave.
Also every dollar you spend a certain percentage comes out of my tip to pay the bar, food runner, busser, maybe the hostess, or other employees. I lose 6% to other staff members of your total bill. I am not paying for you to eat.
So what you can do is you can get your food to go.
Also if you do pull that rewritting the total trick that is fine, but I will report you for dining and dashing. I gave you a bill and you left prior to paying the entire bill. That seems like theft. I am not a lawyer but hey I will call the cops and let them sort it out.

I always inspect my food before I eat it. I also smell it before I put it in my mouth. I do this to make sure that it is fresh and has no off odors. I also do this to appreciate the skill of the chef. Few people truly understand how to appreciate fine food. It is a skill such as the tasting of a fine wine.

I am not sure what you mean by not paying the entire bill. If you mean that you added a tip to the bill you gave me, then legally I do not have to pay it.
A tip or gratuity is not a legal mandatory payment. Under the law it is completely optional for the customer. A simple Google search will confirm this. I am an attorney that is how I know.
If you add a tip to my bill, I will simply cross it out and pay the bill minus the tip. If you accuse me of dine and dash I will sue you. Do not embarrass yourself. Gratuity and tips are left up to the discretion of the diner. The law is very clear on this.
If you choose to give me poor service because I didn’t tip you before. You may want to reconsider, because I will contact the corporate office regarding your dismal service. Your employment will be terminated, and I will receive a gift certificate for a future visit.

When you tip you’re not only tipping the server but the guys who
– Washed your Dishes -Which is actually not an easy job not only do they have to clean your plates but kitchen dishes too and Constantly all the time (It doesn’t stop!!) burnt on pots and dishes pile up very fast if you’re not Mr speedy and you can’t go home until it’s all cleaned then you gotta mop the floors change all the garbage and make sure the sink area is all cleaned mats picked up 5pm-1am person normally stays until 3am
– Cooked your food Have you tried sitting in front of 3 BBQ’s for over 8 hours with sometimes no breaks? Well I have and it’s not fun at all especially in +45’c weather AC can only do so much and you have to cook over 100 meats at the same time while 30 of them are cooked a special way and 20 more meat orders pop up almost every 3.5 mins at a busy restaurant
-The guy that Fills your plates up with vegetables and made it look very presentable which is actually more work than it sounds you constantly have to cook vegetables and a ton of other products like potatoes, Soups for 40+ tables on go while making plates and taking side orders from the waiters which can become very over bearing FAST!

There’s a ton of other jobs in the kitchen but it depends on the restaurant but when you say fuck your tip just because you disliked the waiter or you think she’s greedy and doesn’t deserve it you might as well just be sticking your middle finger at all the kitchen staff too who bust their asses off waiters have to share a % of tips with the entire staff that’s current working and for the amount of work the kitchen staff does they deserve a good bloody tip been doing kitchen work for years and let’s just say not everyone can handle it i’ve seen people hired and gone the same night because of how stressful it is. Posts like these just piss me off if you think kitchen work is all easy by all means to get hired in a 4-5 star kitchen and then tell me how your day was moneys on you quit after 1 hour.

I don’t tip because the worker is doing their job. I don’t care if it’s volunteer work they are doing. Their job is to take and deliver orders. Why do I have to tip $10 on a $50 steak dinner but only supposed to give $1 for a $5 grilled cheese when i have the same amount of plates? It makes no sense. Funny that you call us low lives because most servers are in school for jobs such as nursing, surgical, teaching or law. We enjoy 99% percent of classy and educated guests. Just out of curiosity, why is it expected to o tip waiters and waitress when they already make actual menial wage in California? Minimal wage here is $9/hrs. So, I don’t see the point in tipping if they’re making full minimal wage. I don’t see the reason to tip here if that is the case because tipping is only required for waiters and waitresses who make like $3/hrs. Perhaps I should stop tipping. I don’t tip anyone else who makes the same amount of money as well as doing hard work. Do I tip the hotel maid? Now that federal law says servers have to make at least federal minimum-wage, tipping has become 100% unnecessary.

While I do agree with you sir, no waiter should expect a tip and should be grateful of the tip they get. Another thing I agree with is that waiters should be nice to you no matter what, not just so they can get a nice tip. But each state determines the wage of a waiter, not the restaurant itself. I live in Georgia and as a waiter I make 2.13 an hour. That is a hard wage to work with. And I just graduated from high school in May, and it is hard for me to find a great job. Speaking from a waiter’s perspective, when we are working 6 tables with 30 customers total, but we still take the time to take great care of you, I do think we deserve a couple of dollars in our pocket to take home at night. 2.13 an hour is not going to put me through college. But, I do respect your opinion, and agree with some points.

As you can see from the link I provided, every tipped worker in the United States has to receive $7.25 an hour (more in some states) regardless if they are tipped or not. Most employers are allowed to give you a base pay of $2.13 an hour with the assumption that your tips will equal over $7.25 an hour. If your tips don’t add up then your employer HAS TO make up the difference by federal law. If your employer refuses to make up the difference then he is breaking the law and I’d urge you to report him to the federal labor council. He would most likely lose his business over it.

That is correct yes, you should expect to make up the amount in tips. But, that still is not that much an hour. I of course do not expect to get an awesome job and make a ton being an 18 year old with only a high school degree and 1 year of total prior experience in the workforce, but that does not invalidate how hard I work for my paycheck and tips. If someone chooses not to tip, like I said, it is their choice and does not deserve judgement, a customer is a customer no matter the tip, but I do think throwing a couple of dollars on the table could be beneficial to a lot of servers. We really do work hard, we are more than just conveyer belts.

I don’t have a desk job where I can sit on a computer and file papers all day. You are 45 and have obviously worked hard for a long time to earn what you do, so compared to the job I do, of course it’s going to sound petty to say I work hard. This is my second job and my first job was a desk job, so in comparison, yes it is much more difficult and strenuous. And I have never said that being a server requires special skills to do the job, because that is not the case. But, I am working my way through college on my own, and am doing the best I can to get by. I don’t want to be a waitress forever obviously, and I have dreams, but dreams take time and work to come true. What ever happened to pride? What ever happened to puting out the best product no matter what? Why would you want something that you are bringing out look horrible? Do you have no respect for your restaurant, job, or product? I am a server and I would never spit in a customer’s food, that is just rude and disrespectful and will only make you look bad. Tipping isn’t mandatory, so if you spit in a person’s food, you just look like the asshole for being spiteful. You should take pride in yourself by looking your best, serving your best, and delivering the best product. How can you be proud of yourself if you spit in a person’s food? It just depends on the restaurant and the hours you work. Some nights are better than others. I work at an Ihop that is open 24 hours and I work 5pm to about 3am or 4am and, depending on the day, those hours aren’t too hot for tips.
