5 reasons why I won’t tip you if you’re a waiter

It never fails to shock me how a tip is demanded in the US. People simply refuse to listen to reason when we (yes, there are others!) tell them that leaving a tip isn’t necessary. Well, I’m hoping for too much here, but if you’re a waiter, here are 5 reasons why I will try my best not to give any money to you and why the reasons for tipping are crappy.

1. You act as if you’re my best friend

Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.

Christ, you offend me – kneeling down next to my table, pretending to like me and chatting as if you’re my best friend when it’s obvious that all you’re after is the tip! I’m not a bloody money bag you know. I will pay the bill which includes the cost of the food, the environment and the salaries of the people involved – nothing more.

The only way to get money out of me that I don’t have to legally pay is by prying it out of my cold dead hands…

Bottom line: I don’t want to know your name, or interact with you for any longer than I have to in order to place my order. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the equivalent of a conveyor belt that brings me my food and a computer into which I input my order. Of course, I won’t be rude. But don’t expect me to interact with you any more than I would with some stranger.

Did you earn this tip?

2. You don’t get paid enough

And this is my problem how exactly? It’s astonishing that customers are expected to make up for your employer’s cheapness in not paying you a decent wage. Please include the full cost in everyone’s bill thank you very much. I’ll pay it because I have to and the charge is there for me to see.

What’s really funny here is that no one seems to criticize the employers! All criticism is reserved for non tipping customers instead of the owners of the restaurant for not paying a decent wage. Wtf! Could it possibly be because you guys know you can make much more by tips and under report your income to the IRS?

3. You’ll spit in my food if I don’t tip you?

And I’ll shoot your kid if you don’t give me a million dollars. Seriously, am I even hearing this right? You’re actually using the threat of blackmail to make me pay you? Well as long as you’re openly claiming to be a criminal it’s all right I guess.

Fortunately that’s why I prefer buffets. Listen apart from it being illegal, this shows your poor integrity. But if you spit in someone’s food because they didn’t give you money you didn’t earn, then you’re a loser and deserve to be a waiter for the rest of your life.

4. Bringing me my food isn’t worthy of being paid extra

Did you cook it? Did you invent it? No. You picked it up and brought it to me. While it might not be easy, there are plenty of jobs which are much worse – shop floor workers for example. And I’ve been a shop floor manager, so I know. Face it – compared to other jobs, being a waiter is unskilled. You get paid what the market will think your services are worth. You don’t deserve more for your work over and above what your employer should pay you.

5. Money doesn’t grow on trees

I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!

By the way, the same thing above applies to all professions that demand tips including those on cruise liners.

So now that you understand why I won’t give you money you don’t deserve, stop with the “oh how could you?” attitude. I can. And I will.

Update: Here’s a rebuttal of the many silly justifications for tipping that people have given in the comments section.

  1. I’m not sure if many of the commenters understand that a tip is not “take it or leave it” money for the servers. These are not people, at least not in North America (I’m assuming that is where many of you are reading/commenting on this from), who are making minimum wage, then taking home tips on top of that. In fact, in 19 states the wage for tipped workers is $2.13 an hour. On top of that, there are “tip outs” given to other parties in the restaurant (ie: bussers, hosts, kitchen staff, bar, house ect.) which usually amount to somewhere between 4-6% of a servers gross sales, regardless of the tips they have received that shift. The reason for making the quantity of the tip up to the customers; is to make the server more accountable to each individual table and ideally more attentive to each customers’ needs. This does not however, mean that tips are a fully optional source of revenue for servers. The alternative is using the system found in places like Europe or Australia, where the cost of eating out is raised and servers are paid higher wages, as well as receiving some benefits that are more comparable to other industries. In this system, tipping is more uncommon and usually only occurs when service is above what is expected. Service also tends to be slower and less friendly or courteous than what we are accustomed to in North America, since an element of accountability towards customers is removed. Either way the customer is paying a servers wage it is just that one way is more direct.

You make $7.75 an hour minimum with or without tips. This is federal minimum wage. I don’t care who you tip out you still have to make a minimum of that per hour.

There is no reason why any money should be based upon customers tipping you. Get a real job bitch, you are already overpaid by five dollars an hour.

  2. What a funny blog and replies. This shows there are two types of people in this world. Assholes like the blogger who feels he is superior and looks down on service industry people and then the bitter wait staff who by their comments, will never get out of the industry.
I tip 20% or more, I am not a sheep. I do it because I know most servers work hard and the tips get shared with a lot of staff. if serviced was really really bad, you will get 15%.
We need service industry personnel. see what happens if your trash hauler goes on strike.

To the blogger, get over yourself. you obviously have issues and a very bitter person. must suck to be you and you can come back with whatever response you want to disagree but I do not waste my time reading responses so I will not see it so do not waste your time with me sir. you are a bitter ass hole..

You are right we need people to haul trash they are important and do an important job.
We don’t need waiters and waitresses because they are losers of society and can’t get a real job. They are nothing but modern-day slaves waiting on people.
When I go to the bathroom to wash my hands I could easily pick up my food and bring it to the table. I don’t need a waitress to do that for me.
Nobody needs a retard to bring them their food when it’s ready to be picked up from the kitchen. Any adult that does this for a living is a dumbass loser.

Do you think servers just bring you your food then stand around with their thumbs up their asses? You aren’t the only customer in the whole restaurant. Fast food cashiers give you your food and a cup for your drink, that makes them conveyor belts. Servers do more than that, that makes them servers, not conveyer belts.

Human conveyor belts who dare to complain about having to serve me without getting a tip that they don’t deserve should be rounded up and hauled off to camps in Poland to wait their eventual demise

I am not a waitress to pay myself through college. I am a waitress because I am saving money for my near future. Would you like to get up and get your own food? Your own drinks? Oh, and would you also like to clean the bathrooms? Because in many restaurants, like the one I work in, servers clean the bathrooms.Would you like to sweep or vacuum the restaurant’s floors? Because servers do that too. For $2.16 an hour. Most of which goes to taxes. Our salaries are not included in the price of your food or drink. Our salaries depend on you. Next time you eat at a restaurant, save the waitress’s time. Tell her you won’t tip her. We’ll see how satisfied you are then. Or, maybe you could just not go out, since it is known that you are expected to tip when you walk in. Oh, and servers are below you? I’m a server and I graduated high school an entire year early with an academic honors diploma, I was in the top of my class, received many academic awards, and was in the National Honors Society. I’m currently studying law in college, where I have been offered many opportunities to be a part of an academic society. You are not superior to me.

In most states you actually get the states minimum wage with or without tips. Waiting on the wealthy and cleaning bathrooms is what lower-class people like you do. I am sure you were inferior in high school and picked on because of your smarts, so now that you have something that is significant, you shit on other people and make them feel inferior to make up for your destroyed high school ego. And, I can only assume that you have yet to find a way to feel proud of yourself, so you brag to strangers on the internet to get the satisfaction that you cannot get from yourself. (Did I mention I am studying psychology?)You make yourself out to be so much more important than you actually are. You are no Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, or Albert Einstein, so don’t be so pretentious and act as if anyone actually wants to hear about your job description or that you have to use small terms. A person that serves fast food works harder and does more than you. Being a waitress is a lazy job with no responsibilities or training required.
The fast food worker probably needed at least a half hour worth of training. You just needed to learn where the food pick up area is, and the location of the bar. Training for you is now complete.

You must be pretty stupid if it took you 5 days of training to learn where to pick up the food, and the location of the bar. Your job is stupid simple that’s why you’re paid squat. A waitress should be seen and not heard.

Okay it was five days of required training. And, as I have previously stated, unless you know where I work, you don’t know the list of responsibilities and different things I have to do during my shift. It’s more than picking food up and puting it down. But, you wouldn’t know that, of course, which is why it is so easy for you to make a generalized statement about a job that has different responsibilities at every restaurant. And, as I also have stated, I am not stupid and I am only a server because I am 18 and paying my way through college and this is the best job I could get considering my age and the fact that I only have a high school degree.

Last night my family went to red lobster for endless shrimp. I paid my bill with no tip. As I was leaving the bathroom, the waitress asked me if it would’ve killed me to leave her a couple of dollars. I asked her what she thought she did that deserved a tip. Her mouth was moving and all I heard was blah blah blah. I told her that it is her fucking job, and how dare you bother me about this.
So I spoke with the manager and shift supervisor. I received a $50 gift card to come back again. The best part was they sent the waitress home for the evening. A worthless waitress is easily replaceable but a paying customer is not.

5 reasons that the jackass that wrote the original blog is a douchebag:
      1) If you don’t feel that tipping is necessary, either go some place where it isn’t customary or stay home, which ironically could be the same place: hell.
      2) It isn’t always our pleasure to listen to total strangers drone on about how miserable their live are. Omg! You are expected to tip! Then there’s the act like we can stand you acting like our friend/future ex-spouse simply because some @$$hole before didn’t tip and now we have to make up for it.
      3) Money doesn’t grow on trees! You said it yourself! I get $2.13 an hour. No paycheck. Also, I have to tip out the other people that make your visit bearable, people that run food, bussers, bartenders, etc.
      4) Someone has to serve the food at those restaurants and we can’t help it if the bosses don’t pay a regular wage. If business is slow, they can’t afford to pay a full salary to the servers, bussers and so forth that would be necessary to have on the clock for some pain in the ass ungrateful tables such as yourself that complain about everything and have stuff comped because their food was so horrible, even though they ate most of it with a gallon of ranch, which they expected was free refills.
      5) Someone was clearly born with a silver spoon in their mouth and apparently their money is too good for us lowly servers. Hey! With all the money you’re saving by not tipping, you should hire a personal chef and cease wasting every servers’ time that has ever had you darken and waste their table. I bet they’re so tight they squeak!!

If I ever found out that I was waiting on you, I’d crop dust the hell out of you. I’ll just let you ponder that one :) xoxo (I know ya like it when we are overly friendly)

  3. Hey, asshole, guess what? I don’t chat with my customers unless they chat with me. I don’t care if someone doesn’t tip me, because it is not required and it will not discourage me or anger me, in fact, it won’t even put a damper on my mood. I don’t complain about not getting tips because that is a shitty and unprofessional thing to do as a server. And, since you want to talk about how much of a loser I am, I would love to meet an 18 year old who has a highly skilled job. Because I am 18, fresh out of high school, and a freshman in college, so I am sorry I am not a CEO of a world wide corporation. So, please, continue to make ignorant and generalized statements about me, tell me how stupid I am, call me names, and whatever other shitty thing you can think of because I am a server. Because, at the end of the day, my life is just beginning so I have plenty of time to grow as an adult and become successful and happy. My job as an 18 year old server does not define me or restrict the possibilities I have in my future. As a matter of fact, all experience, no matter what job it may be, is good experience. As long as it puts money in my pocket and in my savings account. I have family, friends, happiness, and money, and not you, nor any other opinionated asshole can take that away from me. So take your snide, vexatious, contemptible, pretentious, scurrilous, unscrupulous comments and stick them somewhere, okay? Alright, have a wonderful day.

It’s unfortunate that neuroscientists have never actually come to the conclusion that brain size and smarts correlate, because then your comment about my intelligence and brain size would be correct. But, since you don’t actually know anything about me or my skills as a person, your comment about my brain literally means nothing to anyone. People do care what I have to say, and those people actually mean something to me. Random people on the internet whom I have never and will never meet as long as I live who don’t give a flying fuck about what I have to say mean absolutely nothing to me. I am simply sharing my opinion and defending myself, and so are you. People don’t give a fuck about what you have to say and people don’t give a fuck about what I have to say. Mhm, a doctoral degree banking 500k? Alright, well for all I know you are living in your mom’s basement, weigh 700 pounds, and play World Of Warcraft all day, so I am not impressed with your statement. I think it’s funny you know that I am not graduating college, that means you have a doctoral AND you can tell the future, that is very impressive, give yourself a pat on the back. I am simply defending the fact that we are all people and a person’s job does not define them and just because you think you are so high and mighty and superior does not mean your status or opinions mean more to anyone than dog shit on the bottom of a shoe. There are wealthy people who spend their time helping the less fortunate and those who need help. If you are as wealthy as you say you are, why can’t you toss a couple of dollars on the table to help a server out? Why can’t you treat someone with respect and kindness? For all you know, you could get in some kind of horrible accident tomorrow and lose your ability to do your job, then what? How long will all your money last? No one will care about your doctorate degree if you can’t even use it anymore. It’s easy to talk about how lowly and worthless a person is when you have never walked a day in their shoes. You can make a judgement about my intelligence and my future just like I can make a judgement about you being a 700 pound, World Of Warcraft playing mama’s boy. So why don’t you take all your money and pay someone to be impressed by you and kiss your ass. You keep on being a “doctor” in whatever field you claim to be in and I will continue to work on my BA in mental health and become a contributing member of society who actually acknowledges the fact that every job in this country is relevant. Have a wonderful life

Maybe we should have let your family suffer during the Sino-Indian War and I could name a dozen other examples of how India’s culture is flawed and needed US help(like economics)… Readers remember they are not all born equal there… It’s a Caste system and he just want to be on top.

It’s no different in the USA. We have poor people nobody gives a shit about. They are not important. Then we have rich people. We are important, control 90% of the wealth and are superior to poor people and waitresses. Rich people control the USA. This is the cast system that we have, which isn’t much different than India.

I make between 50 and 60 dollars an hour, I cover a section of 15 -20 tables, and about 70 tables a day, over all. I have no mortgage, no C.C debt, no student loans, no bank loans, no monthly internet bill as I use the public wifi from Starbucks next door, no car payments…nada. health insurance and 300 a month for rent…that’s it Then I store all of my money at home off the financial grid of the banks so I’m not bothered by the IRS. 5. Honestly I am in highschool, I am 18, and I am playing college tennis at a very good division 3 school next fall.

I can’t pay for tennis lessons anymore, times are tough so I became a server to fund what has been my life for 12 years with no breaks.I work harder than most people making 6 or 7 figure jobs, while my job doesn’t require the same skill, I am definitely more exhausted in my daily life than many people who make that much money.

I have school 7 hours a day, I work 7 hour shifts, play tennis for 3 hours(I wish I could play 5-6), and I sleep 7 hours. I go to work every day at 5, (except weekends, I am either travelling for tennis or working odd shifts), finish work at 12 at night(fridays and mondays till 2) and sleep till 7 am, I wake up at 7 every morning and work my ass off to finish school so that I can practice before work, sometimes I get 5 hours, sometimes I get 1, but it always averages out at around 3 hours. Then I get ready for work and do the same thing over again.

Being a server in an understaffed restaurant is more difficult than you could imagine, often times I have to take care of 8 tables or more at a time. You have to be conscious about which tables are drinking more and ordering more, as well as having to be at their table a minimum of 6 times during their meal.

    1 Drink orders when seated
2 Bring drinks and take food orders
3 Bring plates and extra pieces if they order anything like pizza or a shareable appetizer (optional step only if needed)
    4 Bring food
5 Mandatory check back to see if food is okay
    6 Present the check
7 Come back to receive payment
8 Bring back change or the credit card receipt(optional step only if they don’t say keep the change, or if they used a credit card)

Typical mealtimes at my restaurant are about 45 minutes.

Imagine juggling 8 tables which require a minimum of 42 steps taken to serve them. That puts me at just over a minute to complete each step. Given some steps are lengthier than other, but it still is very fast paced and stressful to keep track of that many people and tables.

These steps are assuming they never ask for refills and don’t order more than 2 times, drinks and food.

But we all know everyone wants a refill at least once and most groups order appetizers and then the main course.

I could lie and say that I do more than that, because there are often days when servers can’t show up because of sickness or other reasons, but this is a pretty average and basic amount of work I have to do.

There are slow days and there are hectic days, not every day do I come home Exhausted, but there are also days that are far more hectic where I take care of over 50 tables in the course of the night. Those nights I juggle about 15 tables/checks to do my job.

I have been a waiter for 2 months now since I turned 18, I have had a job for 8 months to help out. In my short time being a waiter I have sold over $10,000 worth of food and drinks. I have only been a full time waiter for 3 weeks now, as I held 4 other positions where I worked. In a night I have sold over 700$ worth of food and drinks before. To show you how that looks, the average bill I cash out is $22. That means that if every bill I cash out is my average bill payed, I would have taken care of 32 people.

But often that is not the case, and my bills are much different depending on where I am working whether it be near the bar or dining.

Often times I have to deal with many tables and many people requesting separate drink orders, which are not $22.

Being a server is tough, you may only have to take orders and bring food, but the amount of work it takes is often more than what people see. If you don’t leave us a tip it doesn’t matter that much because you are a minority of people. But to say that we don’t deserve it is a spit in the face to all of us young 18 year olds who are trying to make money for our livelihood, school, or even to help support our family.

I googled this because I had 3 tables Wednesday night which each spent over $180 on their tabs. I received $40 tips that night. I had a total of 10 tables and brought in over $900 for my workplace. I got small tips from those that didn’t order much and a couple decent tips from those who thought I did a great job, but out of those 3 parties of over 10 people, I received a big fat 0.

I am as nice and work as hard as I can, I don’t expect a customary 15% tip from every guest as I understand 1 or 2 dollars is okay if they didn’t a lot of service, or if their bill was very small. I also don’t expect a $30 tip every time someone spends $200 on a meal. But to not even give me a $10 bill is ridiculous and borderline cruel. Especially if you leave a mess on the table (which I have to bus), and gum on my plates (which I have to clean).

When someone needs the money, and you know they aren’t being paid a real wage, why do you not tip them?

What cruel reasons do you people have for not tipping someone trying to make an honest paycheck?

And what give you the RIGHT to consider any less of us for working our asses off to get you good service and provide for ourselves?

Being a waiter is something everyone should do at least once in their lives to understand how hard even the low skilled job workers put in to get their money.

There is a reason not many people last as servers, and why many of the employees opted for a hourly wage job. Being a server is stressful and hard, not everyone can do it and deal with guest complaints and issues as well as others.

Most of the guys commenting about how they wouldn’t tip could never make it as a waiter, I’m not saying it takes a lot of skill because it doesn’t, but I am saying it takes a lot of hard work and effort.

Being a waiter is like benching 500 pounds, it doesn’t take skill but it sure is damn hard.

My average dinner bill is $180, I do this twice a week. On $360 a 20% tip is $72. Wow 72 dollars for a dumb bitch to fetch food. Screw that zero tip. When the waitress or bitch ass waiter cries after seeing zero tip it makes my day.
You get paid min wage, so no tip for you ever.
$72 X 52 weeks = $ 3744 saving for a Disney vacation. Saving money is easy. Tipping is something foolish stupid people do.

You are stupid and a liar. Under the law you cannot tip out from money you never gained. You are a lying piece of shit. Also you have to make at least federal minimum wage with or without tips.
There is no reason to ever tip people like you. However if you want to keep your job you better give me good service.

I came to this website hoping for some information on what other servers, whether they are in college like me or not, do during the off-season for money since tourism has died in my place of residence. What I found seems to be uninformed hatred. First of all “Mr. Accountant”, I know you hid your name because you’re afraid of exposing yourself after all of these rude and ignorant comments. You haven’t ever worked in a restaurant, have you? I’m not sure why. Maybe you had/have no ambition outside of school during college, or maybe you never went to school and opted out of the service industry. Either way, tip outs to bartenders, bussers, porters, or sushi staff all come out of food sales. Tipping our fellow coworkers is mandatory whether we make tips or not. That being said, people like you cause us to occasionally pay to come in to work during the winter by not leaving a dime. It’s humorous how often times when someone’s argument is invalid, they resort to name calling. Anyway I wanted to let you know that I forgive you for being how you are because you simply do not know how the service industry works. Have a great day, and I hope you think about others when making decisions to speak or act in the future.

Ok, fine. Lets abolish the tipping standard. Completely
Now nobody is required to tip at any establishment in the states. Now as a waiter i make $4.95 an hour. Minimum wage in my state is 8.25. So now, $3.30/hour legally has to be added to my check. That is 66% of my current wages my employer now has to make up. Guess where that money is going to come from. You got it, food and drink prices. So now we take your $180 bill and we add an extra 66%. Congradulations, your bill is now almost $300. So now that we have abolished the tipping standard, your food now costs more and i make less money. So we both lose. Its almost as though the tipping standard is in place so that it benefits everybody. And all of this doesnt account for the back of house workers, the food runners, the guys that roll all your silverware and stock up plates, barbacks. Because guess where their wages come from. You guessed it, me. I tip them out a percentage of my total sales for the night. So when you have your $180 tab and you stiff me, you havent just stiffed me, you have stolen $5.40 from me. What you pay for on ypur bill, is the cost to get the food in the building, to pay someone to wash the dishes required to cook said food, to pay the people required to cook your food, and the managers required to keep the shift running smoothly. Barwly any money from your tab goes to pay the server. My checks come out to usually 0. This is for your benefit, not mine. So like the first guy said, you dont want to tip, go to a buffet

That’s one of the most hilariously wrong pieces of arithmetic I’ve seen in a long, long time. You can’t just take 66% of the bill regardless of its size and add it to your wage. If you did that, you would be earning 100s of dollars per hour instead of the $8.25.

Instead, you need to take the difference and divide it by the average number of your clients. That is the extra amount per table. In your case, if you serve even two tables an hour, it’s $1.65 per order. A pittance. The customers won’t even notice.

If you want a more detailed example, look at “Bullshit point 3” in this article: http://www.bhagwad.com/blog/2014/philosophy/why-your-reasons-for-demanding-a-tip-are-wrong.html/

Yeah, no…paying servers minimum wage will not magically raise prices by 66%. Sorry, but math just doesn’t work that way.

You are so stupid I can see why you are a waiter With or without tips by law you have to make at least federal minimum-wage. You are not even capable of doing simple math. I can’t stop laughing at your stupidity.
You will be a waiter for the rest of your life because you are too stupid to do anything else. I really wish you only made $2.13 an hour. Because federal minimum-wage is over five dollars an hour more than you are worth.

You shouldn’t take a minimum wage job and expect customers to pay you extra just because you chose a shitty job. Want more than the minimum wage the job is worth? Get a better paying job. It is your employer’s responsibility to pay you, not the customer. And you signed on knowing that was your pay.

Idk where all of y’all are from but it must be somewhere cold and miserable. Here in the south we value attitude and service. A waiter/waitress can make or break a dinner. They can be assholes or screw ups that completely ruin the night, or they can be pleasant and friendly and create a dining experience that you can truly enjoy. A tip is not something that you have to leave, it’s just a way to show your appreciation and gratitude. After all, they don’t actually have to be nice to you. Maybe it’s different where y’all are from but that appreciation goes a long way down here. Have a blessed day and may God bless y’alls cold, miserable hearts.

Tell that to the wait staff posting pics online of receipts where they got “stiffed” for a tip. It shouldn’t be expected, but it is, and that is the problem. Even where wait staff get $15 an hour they expect that tip and lose their mind if they don’t get one, regardless of how poor their service was. Worse is the fact that they expect a percentage of the tab. Why should I give a bigger tip one place over another for the same service just because the food is more expensive? How does that make sense?

And that isn’t even including others who do the same job but are not in a “tipping” job.

No restaurants, anywhere motherfucker, is paying 15 dollars an hour. No yet. But let me just show the ones who will, what’s gonna happen:

What This Means For Small Business:

According to Anthony Anton, president and CEO of the Washington Restaurant Association, before the wage increase, a typical cost breakdown for Seattle restaurants was: 36 percent of funds devoted to labor, 30 percent to food costs, 30 percent to other operating costs, and the remaining 4 percent was profit margin. However, under the minimum wage increase, if a restaurant owner made no changes, labor costs would rise to 42 percent in quick service restaurants and 47 percent in full service restaurants.

Arguing that the wage increase is harming the workers it was intended to help, the free-market think tank the Washington Policy Center said, “The [restaurant] shut-downs have idled dozens of low-wage workers, the very people advocates say the wage law is supposed to help. Instead of delivering the promised ‘living wage’ of $15 an hour, economic realities created by the new law have dropped the hourly wage for these workers to zero.”
