It is compulsory to have official ID on you all throughout the EU and almost ALL govts throughout the world issue their citizens one. The idea that this intrudes on someones privacy is one I personally find ridiculous. the EU's probably the most liberal part of the world as far as personal views and privacy is concerned and not once in the 12 yrs I've lived here have I ever heard anyone complain their ID cards being a hindrance to that!
