Insecure NRIs and India Bashing

Indians love to abuse their country. However, there is a particular type of NRI whose entire self worth is linked to having “escaped” from the hell hole of India. These obnoxious individuals will go out of their way to pick out the very worst of every aspect of our nation and completely deny any redeeming features whatsoever.

A few days ago, my wife ran into one of these characters on her profile at travbuddy.com. Some desi staying in San Fransisco took umbrage at her wanting to visit Delhi. Without any warning or provocation, he began attacking her choice. Here is how it went (reproduced with all spelling and grammar mistakes in tact :)

Jasvirjr says:Well Anpa you might have reason to visit to New Delhi but It can’t be nobody’s dream destination. A polluted, unorganized, overcrowded city.

Jesse
San Francisco
USA

Notice two interesting phenomena pertaining to our combative NRI friend.

  1. Name changed from “Jasvir” to “Jesse” in the signature even though he’s talking to an Indian who knows how to pronounce his name
  2. Proud disclosure of his location in the US. This is no automated signature – he’s made damn sure everyone knows where he is.

anupa_rk says:Jesse, every city has its charm. As does New Delhi. You may have your own reasons to dislike it, but I bet you’ll find that several people love it, look forward to visiting it, and even call it home :). In my experience it is usually Indians who undermine India and its charms. I dont think you would have made this comment of a city like Rome which is also considered to be unorganised and overcrowded!

Lets be fair travelers here! :) Peace!!

Jasvirjr says:Well you can’t deny the truth or facts I dont’ know how would you compare Rome with Delhi. Let us acknowledge that we have poor infrastructure, chaois rules virtually all roads in India. I am sorry I can’t admire something that does not meet an ordinary persons expectations. Why would I make this comment city like Rome because we don’t have same experience when we are in Rome Vs. Delhi. There are other cities worse than Delhi but at this point my opinion is about Delhi only. And IGI is nothing more than a run down bus stand where chaois rules 24/7. I am not undermining Delhi because I am Indian but based on facts and our grueling experience everytime we land there.

At this point, wifey gets pissed:

anupa_rk says:Its all a matter of perception, isnt it?!

I for one, love the chaos and confusion of India. I greatly prefer it over the ultra sanitised and pedestrain unfriendly streets of the suburbs of the US.
And oh, while we’re at it, I love the chaotic traffic too.. esp with the stray dogs and cows thrown in!!! :D

Which is why I choose to live in India!

I understand that you may have had bad experiences, but its slightly inappropriate to attack a person’s home country on their profile, dont you think?

No reply this time!

So there we have it. A prime sample of people whose only claim to fame is that they’ve moved to phoren land. Of course, the facade doesn’t fool anyone and is easily seen through. A massive inferiority complex underlies people like this because at the end of the day, they know who they are and where they came from. And they’ll always remain Indians :)

Gotta feel sorry for them really.

  1. To Sonal from above, Your cousins might be suffering from an eternal coconut syndrome. Stay away from them and surround yourself with people who are open-minded and objective in their world view. They are overcompensating for their once FOBness and their current “brown” ness. They might appreciate their Indian upbringing when their teenage kids start finding them too regressive and ancient. I would still not count on it.

I have two kinds of Indian friends. One group that has “losers” like me who still have their “hindistani dil”s. The second group that wants to pretend as if they were never born in India. Guess which group avoids me and vice versa? They adopt accents, haircolors, hobbies and vacation habits that ONLY the mainstream (generally caucasians) have. They read only books written by western authors, they see only hollywood movies. They give money only to western charities etc. They eat their curries only at home or hiding in their cars but eat burgers and pasta out in the open and picnic areas.

    Anyway, its a nice article.
I have to say that you can’t change their minds. Also, Indians who came here for work (the software crowd) appreciate India and the host country in a rather balanced way. The India haters are usually the ones who come here for studies before 90s. They hate all things India, including the recent arrivals who didnt not have to go through the same kind of immigrant struggles, humilating campus hazing for being different and financial challenges . Expressing their hate for India is like a ray of sunshine in their otherwise bleak lives. If I had to sacrifice so much of my identity in order to be accepted by the “cool” natives of a foreign land and realize that inspite of all the posturing, I am still an outsider, it has got of hurt!

  2. Totally agree,it’s always our race that given a chance to better themselves starts to act white, ignorant and racist,as is probably why the British managed to rule for so long in India, due to these individuals, but thankfully they are just that,Individuals!!! And not the majority.

Nawaz first of all you need to take a history lesson before making a comment. There was no “India” before the British! The subcontinent was several sovergn monarchies. It’s the british who consolodated those states and which after the first govenment of those consolodated states (congress, nehru, gandhi, sardar patel) founded the nation.

  4. I dont think this person represents the whole of the Indian peoples staying overseas. Theres many a reason people go overseas from India but saying all of them hold the same train of thought as this guy is completely unfair… not to mention overreactive as it was clearly observable lare amounts of NRIs (or OCIs) stil retain a great deal of patriotism as evidenced through their grand reception of Narendra Modi in numerous countries such as America & Australia.

  5. I’m sure your wife Arupa will appreciate the chaos and traffic of New Delhi during some emergency when she or someone she she loves needs to get to a hospital! My parents are from India and i’ve visited several times. Yes there are some nice and unique things about the country like seeing monkeys and cows on the street, I also appreciated the range of colors indians wore. But on a whole it is a hell hole. Got my luggage stolen, got ripped off, my girlfriend was hounded by unwanted attention. I’m done never again.

  6. One likes India more than any other country because they haven’t visited foreign countries, not experienced the lifestyle in other countries. Quality of life is better in most foreign countries than in India. How come you like to see animals on the already congested and dirty streets of India? I don’t understand what people like so much about india.

      Hey,

You don’t have any rights to say bad about any country. Indian is an country where richest people love. You can eat food here all the time at gurudwaras and temples with no cost. Does any other country provide this facility?

Also India is multi religion country and Everyone has the rights to worship their Gods. There are so many good truths about India. But I can’t explain here in details. You need to visit India then you come to about real life in India.
