Male equivalent of “Bitch?”

My wife has often complained that a woman can be called a bitch, but there’s no equivalent word in English for men. It seems that “bitch” is a particularly nasty word to apply to women, and I can’t deny the truth of this. Here goes:

“You Bitch!”

Alternative to "Bitch" - what does one call a man?
Alternative to "Bitch" - what does one call a man?

See how it kind of explodes on the lips? The tone is important – you gotta put all your effort in the “bi” part and mix it with appropriate scorn and loathing. The end result is something that is unique, remarkably pejorative, and when appropriately applied, dare I say it, deeply satisfying?

It’s kind of unfair to men that no similar word exists in the lexicon for them. What can you call a guy? An asshole? A dick? Faggot? The last one is pretty nasty, but unfortunately I end up judging the person who uses it rather than the person it’s aimed at. None of these words really encompasses the full impact. Let’s say that one more time:

“Bitch!”

I’ve heard some women on TV call men “You Rat” with quite good effect. But it seems you need to have the right personality to pull it off. I can’t imagine a quiet but effective “You rat.” But if you want to use “Bitch,” the possibilities are endless.

So those of you who haven’t faced this problem, educate the rest of us. What do you use for swearing at men with the same effectiveness as “Bitch?”

  1. “Asshole” is the equivalent, up to and including the emphasis on the first syllable. If someone cuts you off in traffic and you can see what gender they are, you’re probably going to say “what an asshole!” if it’s a man and “what a bitch!” if it’s a woman.

Like “bitch”, “asshole” is gender-specific (though a few people may erroneously apply it to women as well). And you can see quite a few more male-specific epithets here:

  2. It is a hard question to find an answer to, and I have always wondered what it would be but since ‘bastard’ and ‘dog’ doesn’t have the same effect as ‘bitch’ so I would probably say (excuse my french) ‘cunt’ cause it has the similer ring as ‘bitch’ however it is quite rude and can be very insulting. Thats just my opinion though.

  3. I agree with Jack. In the UK, “cunt” applies to both males and females.

For some odd reason we only use it against females here in the U.S. Maybe we’re more sexist or misogynistic in this country?

@Mycaroma: You’re on the right track. Insulting a man’s masculinity is probably the worst type of insult.

  4. There are several male equivalents to “bitch” as in RUDE or MEAN including:

Prick (dick is the lighter version)
    Tool
    Douche
    Douchebag
    Cocksucker
    Dickweed
    Rat / Assrat
    Jackoff / Jagoff / Jerkoff
    And in the UK: CUNT

As far as “bitch” as in the GENDER such as how some African Americans will say “that’s his bitch over there”, there are now starting to say Dick, Sausage, and Dildo.

A lot of people say “this is a sausage fest” when there are too many men at a party or nightclub. And that’s where these terms sprang up from (no pun intended).

I recently heard someone say in a club, “Hahaha, look at that drunk sausage over there.”

  5. If the person related to you calls you a bitch, say “I know what you are, but what I am?” or if it’s like a sibling or parent, say “So ….your a dog? I’m a bitch, which is a female dog, so your a dog too!”

  6. Honestly, I feel like curse words are overused in everyday parlance, so much that all have lost their bite. I’ve hear people very causally and lovingly say, “What a douche…” or “Stupid bitch.” What matters is the tone and the way the words sound coming off the tongue.

For me, if I wanted a “bitch” equivalent for a guy, I would go with “pig.” It’s not a curse word, but it can have such a bite by placing a stress on the pig; it’s like you’re spitting at them. “You’re such a pig” sounds harsher than “you’re such a bitch.”
