{"id":1888,"date":"2010-03-17T01:24:58","date_gmt":"2010-03-17T08:24:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/?p=1888"},"modified":"2010-10-09T02:23:06","modified_gmt":"2010-10-08T20:53:06","slug":"the-currents-of-space-by-isaac-asimov-book-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/2010\/book-reviews\/the-currents-of-space-by-isaac-asimov-book-review.html\/","title":{"rendered":"The Currents of Space by Isaac Asimov &#8211; Book Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yesterday I finished reading <strong>&#8220;The Currents of Space&#8221;<\/strong> which is the second &#8220;Empire&#8221; novel by Asimov and part of his &#8220;Foundation series.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Galactic Empire is in the background and hasn&#8217;t yet reached the point of its decline. The book though, stands on it&#8217;s own merits and one doesn&#8217;t need to know anything about the previous books to enjoy this one. Asimov once again brings out the &#8220;slavery&#8221; concept &#8211; about one world subjugating and exploiting another. It makes one wonder whether there&#8217;s any point to technological advancement when humans are still so throughly savage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_1889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1889\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0765319160?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=expressions09-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0765319160\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1889 \" title=\"Everyone grasping for a resource rich world\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/The-Currents-of-Space-by-Isaac-Asimov.jpg\" alt=\"Everyone grasping for a resource rich world\" width=\"245\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/The-Currents-of-Space-by-Isaac-Asimov.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/The-Currents-of-Space-by-Isaac-Asimov-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Everyone grasping for a resource rich world<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the heart of the book is a detective story which is solved only at the very end. Asimov convincingly talks about interplanetary politics and presents and excellent picture of all the factors involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, for me the highlight of the book was a section towards the end where the rulers of a planet were willing to let a planet with all its people on it be destroyed rather than give up their economic interests. Here is the exact quote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;Junz found revulsion growing strong within him. A planet full of people meant nothing against the dictates of economic necessity!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The parallel in our modern day world is our corporations who would have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/2009\/technology\/patents-standing-in-the-way-of-combating-climate-change.html\">whole world end rather than give up their profits<\/a> (say by paying to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/2009\/environment\/want-to-pollute-pay-for-it.html\">clean up their pollution<\/a>). After all, what difference does it make to them? Profits are the end all for a corporation and fewer profits equals death to them. So no motivation to do the right thing at all. It&#8217;s also the reason why they can be completely money minded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/2009\/rights-and-freedoms\/poor-people-must-die-first-so-says-an-economist.html\">at the cost of everything else<\/a>. There&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhagwad.com\/blog\/2010\/environment\/climate-change\/climate-change-ive-given-up-and-lost-hope.html\">absolutely no hope.<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the end, &#8220;The Currents of Space&#8221; is an excellent sci fi thriller that delivers some important messages.
