Of my eight seedlings, four have come up nicely. They look much the same as my first batch. Here they are:<\/p>\n

I made two mistakes that I wont’ repeat in a hurry. First, always<\/em> give the soil drainage. My ice cube tray didn’t have any and I was never sure about how much to water it. I ended up putting either too much or too little.<\/p>\n

My second mistake was planting the seeds too shallow. I thought this would make it easier for them to come up, but I was wrong. The cotyledon leaves are inside<\/em> the seed and need to slip out – which can only happen if the seed is properly held down by the soil. Otherwise, the seed will rise up along with the seedling in the case of tomato plants. For one seedling, I had to manually slip the seed shell off the head of the poor fellow.<\/p>\n

I’ve transferred them to the small cups in the picture. And I’ll directly plant them in the bucket this time. No point adding a step in between.<\/p>\n

Today was a rainy day, and when the sky cleared up in the afternoon, I made sure that they got some sun for a few hours.<\/p>\n

Naming Problems<\/h2>\n

What names do I give my new batch of seedlings? Without names, I can’t track the progress of each. Of course, I could just number them, but where’s the fun in that?<\/p>\n

So I got an idea the other day. I’ll dedicate each seedling to one of the readers of this post! Suppose one is named after XYZ, that seedling will be called “XYZ’s tomato<\/em>” :D. So if you want to adopt a seedling, just request it and I’ll perform the naming ceremony at that moment. The names will be given out from left to right in the picture above!<\/p>\n
