My first lucid dream!

Last night I had my first ever lucid dream, and it was a beauty! It happened exactly as I imagined it.

I was back in India and suddenly I wondered if I was in a dream or not. Based on my last post on the subject, I used the “watch” technique to figure out whether it was a dream or reality.

So I raised my left hand and saw a watch on my wrist. This alone should have alerted me to the fact that I was dreaming since I don’t wear a watch in real life, but it didn’t. The time in the watch was 9:10 or something. I looked away and then immediately looked back. Lo and behold, the time was now 10:15. So I had it – I was dreaming! At this point in the dream I got really excited. I was in a dream and knew it. It was a lucid dream.

So now what to do? I always wanted to fly, and I knew there were no laws of physics to hold me back. So I jumped…and crashed back to “earth” :D . Turns out my dream was imposing the rules on me whether I wanted to or not.

At this point, the dream began to fade a bit. I felt my bed pressing me, pulling me back to reality. I wanted to stay longer, so I tried to focus hard on the person closest to me in the dream – my wife. I looked at her and by concentrating on her face, was able to buy a few more precious seconds. But it was a losing battle and moments later I found myself back on my bed, squirming in disbelief at the experience!

Later I realized I should have tried harder to create “dream” sensations that would have kept me even longer. Like rubbing my hands together to generate heat or something like that. I’m certainly going to keep that in mind the next time it happens. Maybe I’ll get to fly too! I wish I could mold the dream world to my will. Perhaps that will come with practice. Or maybe I just need to accept and enjoy what my brain gives me and not try and do anything against it. Let’s see.

I know this post is a little late, but just incase anyone reviews this, I have a really good tip for lucid dreaming. I have been a lucid dreamer for a few years. At first, like most people, I would be dreaming, realize I was dreaming and I would wake up upset because I wanted the dream to continue. Ive noticed that more often than not, my lucid dreams involve water, I don’t know why. Like one I had, I was on a large body of water, like an ocean, water all around, but the water was very calm and still, and I was gliding over the top of the water on my feet, like water skiing accept I was bare footed, and I was gliding over this water for a long time and was wondering if I was going to see anything but water. The a large wave picked me up and I rode the top of the wave, it was very high, and the wave approached a city, the city was pretty, it had a very metallic look to it, like the buildings were silvery, shiny and clean. I remember trying to take in as many details as I could so I would remember when I woke. I have flow over rivers, mountain tops, Ive even been out in space. Since I both lucid dream and have occasional out of body experiences, sometimes I’m not sure which one I’m doing.

Anyways, a good way to continue your dreams, or lucid dreams is to have a “key word” or “pass word.” I know this sounds strange, but it was something my father told me to do. I believe its like a “self suggestion.” So the moment you are aware that you are dreaming, you say this “word” to yourself out loud, and it’s like a key. It worked for me and it’s worked for my daughter. First rule is, it has to be a word that only you know, and you don’t share it with anyone else. Now I cant say this will work for everyone, but I know its worked for us.

Now one problem that we had, is when this “pass word” was used to “continue” a dream, the dream would tend to go bad. In other words, it can turn into a nightmare or bad dream for some reason, but it passes, maybe its like a graduation, my daughter had it happen once before it passed, I had two, and again, I can’t speak for everyone, nor do I know if this suggestion will work for you. Good luck!

  1. Hey Bhagwad

Guess what? Way back during my childhood, I remember continuing the same dream after a brief break in between. I don’t know how I used to do that. Not very often but I definitely managed to do it more than once.

This is a topic worth scientific research :)

    Good post. Keep writing.

    Cheers!

This happens with me too Ashish! Others have also told me the same thing. What happens with me sometimes is that I dream there’s an important exam and I forgot all about it until the day before! I haven’t even seen the textbooks…My mom has a recurring dream of missing her train :) I wonder what other dreams people have – I’m sure there’s some significance

Misunderstood your comment :D . I’ve never been able to continue a dream like that – must be nice to have another shot at it eh?

  2. I had my first lucid dream last night… It was an OBE. I was lying in bed, annoyed that I couldn’t get to sleep (it was 8.20am when I checked my watch.) suddenly my left arm randomly rose up into the air, and I thought “ah I have to sit up now! I can’t sleep! I just want to have a lucid dream!” I sat up… Andthats when I realised – I was dreaming! I seemed to be ghost like as I sat up- it was like I was gliding through water as I sat up… I turned around and saw my body sleeping in bed. I was so excited – I’ve been trying for 4 months! I glided onto my knees and swung my legs over the side of the bed. I felt so ghost like, and everything was so silent. I tried to yell “clarity now!” but no words came out – I couldn’t make a sound or break the silence! Plus my vision was impaired – but I was too excited to care. I felt godly..

And I felt my body still lying in bed. The dream faded, like smoke, and I woke up.

Wow – that’s pretty cool Em! Did you really feel that it was an OBE, or was it your imagination constructing the surroundings? Meaning can you get information you normally would have to physically go get?

Suppose for example, a third party picked a card when you were asleep and left it in the next room, could you tell what card it was by going there during your experience and getting the details which we could verify once you woke up? I don’t think that’s possible…

But the cool thing is you were having a dream and you knew it :) I wonder to what extent one can manipulate the dream world…

  3. Sorry I have not replied for a while.
Since then I have had seven more lucid dreams, and each one has been incredible. I find that I can now lucid dream around twice a week!
I think that the dream I had was very, very real, with all the right things in the right places, but I think it was my imagination. I can’t really tell, but everthing was so hyper sharp, that it was hard to doubt it as reality. It was only once I saw myself sleeping that I thought I must be dreaming, due to my attempts to speak.
I’ve found that manipulating the dream world can be hard using some theories, but easier with others. I’ve come a long way since last month! For instance, if I wanted to end up in a fantastic fantasy world, I could either “spin” or “open a for into the scene.” I chose to spin and do this a couple of weeks ago, and it did not work too well, but next time, I opened a door into the scene and everything was so perfect!
I also tried to predict the lottery numbers, but it didn’t work! Haha! But I hope that you have progressed well.
I think that my first lucid dream was more imaginary, but who knows, the area of physics is an area open to debate…

  4. Hey, that's really exciting! I remember my first lucid dream being a very euphoric experience. Ever since the first one, I haven't gone back. I've had about 30 lucid dreams now. I actually just recently started a blog on the subject of lucid dreams. Check it out and leave a comment if you can. http://rudreaming.wordpress.com/ Good luck in your quest for lucidity!
