Christian Missionaries – Show some Fucking Gratitude

Recently, an article in the Huffington Post really pissed me off. It talked about how Christian missionaries are doing terrible things in India by…offering to pay for your kid’s life threatening illness.

Wait what?

Here’s the scenario. Your kid is terribly sick, but you can’t afford the treatment. A Christian missionary offers to help you by paying for the treatment if you convert to Christianity. This insidious offer, according to the author of the article is despicable and unfair. You know what I say?

Show some fucking gratitude!

Because here’s what happens if the missionary doesn’t make that offer. Your kid dies. That’s it. I suppose, that is a preferable outcome huh? I’m sure the author of the article can take great happiness in a child dying because the parent wasn’t able to garner the money to treat them.

How does having a choice leave you worse off than you were before?

“Oh my god, there’s a terrible fate awaiting me! But wait…someone is offering me an alternative. I don’t have to take it, but screw them. Screw that person I say!”

If you as a person would rather a child die than give the parent the option to change their religion and help treat them, then you need to evaluate your priorities. And more importantly, stop pretending to know what is good for other people. They are adults, and they can make up their own mind.

I don’t see the government stepping in to help the parents do I? If they, or adherents of any other religion don’t like the idea of converting people in exchange for help, then let them offer their own aid.

Offer to help, or get out of the way.

Having a choice is never a bad thing, and when someoneĀ gives you a choice, you should respond with a “Thank you” – whether you take the offer or not.

  1. I agree with you wholeheartedly with you. I cannot understand why anyone would object to helping someone in need of help. What harm is this helping others causing these individuals? Is it because they wanted to help first but someone beat them to it?
I seriously doubt that is the case. I have always believed that “ignorance knows no limits especially when it comes to hate” and this is a prime example.

Once again, very good work and prose.

To be fair, there is merit in the charge that Jesus would not ask for anything in return as a condition for helping out others. That however in my opinion, doesn’t by itself make these offers a bad thing. An offer to help is just that…an offer. One can reject it as one pleases. In any case, the person is no worse off than they were before.

Not are they no longer no worst off but they have been, at the very least, exposed to human kindness without strings attached which I believe is a foreign concept to a lot of people in less developed countries. Pure and simple kindness can go a long way when you have never had any or even knew it existed.

This is a good example of people doing as Jesus said we should do in the New Testament, “love your brother as yourself”!!

Well, one can debate whether or not a missionary offering help in exchange for conversion is “kind”. Fortunately, the law does not require us to be “kind”. A person can be an absolute jerk as long as they don’t hurt someone else physically.

  2. I know of no Christian organization that requires convertion before they will offer their help or as a pre-requisite. What few I have personally talked to or read about state emphatically that conversation, a sermon or even receiving literature is never required before you can receive their help and support. What I understand is they ask if you would like to hear about Jesus and if the response is “no”, it is never mentioned again. They say they do this because if they try to require that those needing help listen to their “pitch”, others stop asking for their help and even turn the help and support down they offer.

Then again I do not know about all the Christian charities. I believe there are a hell of a lot more Christian charities that are crooked or running a scam then there are good, honest and reputable Christian Charities. That is why I have difficulty donating at times.

    Have blessed day!!
