Book Review: Second Foundation by Isaac Asimov

At long last, Isaac Asimov addresses the mysterious “Second Foundation.” The first story deals with how the Mule was beaten, and the second with how the first Foundation itself tried to destroy their counterparts. In the process, we’re introduced to a remarkable set of men and women who make up the second foundation. People who are the guardians of Seldon’s plan.

When I first began readingĀ  Asimov’s “Foundation” series, I thought that the word “Foundation” referred to the essentials of his work. Only now do I realize that it has a very specific meaning in the story and that all the books have this common theme running through them. According to the recommended reading order, the next book is “Foundation Edge.” But in line with my desire to follow Asimov’s story development, I will be reading the next book in the chronological order instead which turns out to be “Caves of Steel” – the first Robot novel.

I’m loving Asimov’s books. I wonder if all science fiction writers are like this. Straight, to the point and a nice story full of suspense. In many ways, his novels are detective mysteries. There’s always some final plot twist or mystery to be solved. Keeps you guessing till the end!

  1. I have just started reading Isaac Asimov’s series of books, so far I have read two. It is true to say they keep you on a knife edge – I just can’t put them down once I get started!
