Success! Two shoots: Fathima and Virender – Tomatoes Batch 2: Day 4

I saw nothing this morning when I went to water charges, but on a whim I decided to check back after I finished my work. And holy cow! Heavens to Murgatroyd! Out of my four eggshells, two have shoots in them!

I think they should have names so we can not only follow them individually, but also show them the proper respect they’re due. Each successive name will come from a different part of the world and alternate in gender – just to keep everyone happy :D

So we have here…Fathima!

Introducing Fathima
Introducing Fathima

And now we present…Virender! who’s only a short while behind Fathima. We’ll have to assume they’re brother and sister (I’m the father after all)

Virender makes an appearance!

And now for the puzzle. Over the last few days several little shoots have sprung up all around the eggshells and I always assumed they were weeds. However, my helper who cleans my room swears on all the gods that they’re tomatoes! It’s possible I suppose since I spilled the soil from my previous efforts, but I have no clue what tomato shoots are supposed to look like (Fathima and Virender haven’t fully emerged). So I’m posting pics and hoping that the community will help me figure out their identity.

Are these Tomato soots or weed???
Are these weeds?

If they’re weeds, they’ll have to go sooner or later. If not, then they get their very own names and become part of the family!

This is so exciting. It’s as if everyday is something to look forward to. And to be responsible for growing things is a pretty good feeling, especially given the fact that life itself is so rare and fragile. More updates to come!

  1. I think these are weeds… tomatoes leaves don't look like grass, but I may be wrong, I was a kid when I last saw one.Best wishes to Virender and Fathima. I have heard they thrive on Bollywood music.

  2. Yup, they're weeds. I observed that tomato shoots emerge bent and then straighten out. Weeds come out straight from the start and also have white stems. I've removed them from the gamla. Thanks for the best wishes!
